American Sign Language Major, Educational Interpreting Minor
My name is Kelsey Smith. I am a May 2026 graduate of Clemson University. My major is American Sign Language and my minor is in Educational Interpreting. I have grown up around American Sign Language (ASL) since the fifth grade, and am a passionate and motivated ally for the Deaf community.
I have a long history of involvement in the Deaf community, including a high-school field observation with a group of educational interpreters, being a volunteer camp counselor for Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing children, tutoring Deaf students in grades K-12, and more.
During my time at Clemson, I also spent one year serving as the ASL Club President in 2025-26, a club that values community and communication. I also spent three weeks studying abroad in Australia and New Zealand during May 2025-June 2025, where I learned about their respective sign languages and their Deaf communities.
After graduation, my plan is to continue with my involvement in the Deaf community by becoming an ASL interpreter. I will work as an educational interpreter in South Carolina, where I will be able to use not only the language competency skills that I have gained at Clemson, but also the ethical decision-making skills.
This website includes samples from my education that reflect my work ethic and my passion for learning and improving upon my ASL skills.
