ACTIVATING PRIOR LEARNING PRO FORMAS OR PRESENTATIONS
Ewan MacDonald in History uses a simple pro-forma to start off most of his lessons and activate prior learning. You can see some examples below which can be adapted to suit any subject.
EFFECTIVE TECHNIQUES USING THE WHITEBOARD
Our learning walks have highlighted some great ideas from the RME department, simply using the whiteboard to activate prior learning.
ACTIVATING PRIOR LEARNING IN GROUPS
Activating prior learning in groups, the History department have been using a simple retrieval carousel activity. I caught up with Mrs Harris who talked me through the activity.
As soon as pupils arrive they sit in their groups, each group has a key word or question from previous lessons, the group then use their coloured pen to write around the question or key word, on request each group then gets up and moves to the next table taking their coloured pen and adding something new to the next question or key phrase.
ACTIVATING PRIOR LEARNING - A TARGETED APPROACH
Our English department have a targeted approach to activating prior learning, working as stage partners, Ms Inglis and Mrs Low have been working through a grid that takes apart the current piece of work in English. They have generated a question grid to go alongside their recent teaching on Shakespeare, and use the grid at the start of each lesson to aid retrieval of the previous lessons learning.
