Objectives: 

The purpose of this module is to acquaint the reader with various tapes, rules, and calipers. Upon completion of this module and accompanying lab activities the reader will:

• Understand basic safety guidelines as related to the use of precision measuring tools in shops and laboratories.

• Describe the basic design of various tapes, rules, and calipers to include features, sizes, variations, and the technology behind the tool.

• Describe the difference between calibration and field check, determine when they should be done, and be able to properly demonstrate field checks on various tapes, rules, and calipers.

• Demonstrate application of various tapes, rules, and calipers to include proper usage, obtaining and reading measurements accurately, and performing tool maintenance.
