Band Classes

CONCERT BAND (Fall Semester)

The Concert Band is non-auditioned and available to all 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students. This class meets during 6th block,  Students in this ensemble will receive instruction on improving their instrumental technique, music theory skills and performance skills. This band will perform four major concerts and the POPS concert in the spring. Students in all of the concert ensembles are required to perform as a part of the Pep Band during the year. This group is designated for non-marching band students in the fall. 

SYMPHONIC BAND (Spring Semester)

The Symphonic Band is non-auditioned and available to all 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students. This class meets during 6th block,  Students in this ensemble will receive instruction on improving their instrumental technique, music theory skills and performance skills. This band will perform four major concerts and the POPS concert in the spring. Students in all of the concert ensembles are required to perform as a part of the Pep Band during the year. This group will attend a music festival in the spring. 

WIND SYMPHONY

The Wind Symphony is the most advanced level band at Lakewood. The Wind Symphony meets both semesters during 5th Block and is comprised of mostly 10th, 11th and 12th grade students. A small number of 9th grade students may be invited to enroll in this band. The Wind Symphony performs the finest wind literature and continues the development of refined, professional skills. The Wind Symphony will perform four major concerts per year and in the combined winter concert and POPS in the spring. The Wind Symphony will also participate in major concert band festivals around the state, including the CBA Concert Band Regional. Students in all of the concert ensembles are required to perform as a part of the Pep Band at various sporting events throughout the year. Students are highly encouraged to audition for All State, All County and other Honor bands. The Wind Symphony was selected to perform at the Colorado Music Educators Association Convention in 2013.

PERCUSSION CLASSES

The percussion ensembles meet as a class during seventh and eighth block. The classes are split by ability into the non-auditioned Percussion II, and the auditioned Advanced Percussion Class. Students taking this class learn techniques specific to percussion. In the fall, students audition for their ensemble placement which determines which of the three bands the students will perform with, and their placement in one of the two percussion ensembles that we run during class time. Students will have the opportunity to work on concert percussion, marching percussion, and a variety of multicultural percussion instruments throughout the year. Students in this group will perform at all of the major concerts and at pep band games in the spring. Students are highly encouraged to audition for All County, All State Band and All State Orchestra. 


JAZZ BAND

The Jazz Band rehearses during Tiger Time and before school. Students must be registered for a band class unless there is a particular need for a rhythm section instrument (guitar, bass, piano on case by case basis). PEP BAND

PIT ORCHESTRA

The Pit Orchestra meets in the spring as a part of the LHS Theatre Company. Students who are selected to be in Pit Orchestra must be a part of the Chamber Orchestra or Wind Ensemble. Instrumentation is dependent on the parts from the musical. Rehearsals are held after school from January to March. A schedule will be available at the end of first semester. 

The Pit Orchestra was nominated for a Bobby G Award in 2014 for Outstanding Orchestra for Young Frankenstein and in 2023 for Something Rotten.
