History

"Flying home very late from a tournament in Nashville, Tennessee on December 31, 1990, I looked out the airplane window and saw the New Year's fireworks below as we progressed across the country and I thought to myself, '...it's about time I stayed home with my family during the Christmas season and put on a tournament worthy of recognition!  Therefore, the birth of the Interstate Shootout took place. It has been a pleasure to watch the matriculation of this tournament over time!"

-Gary Lavender, Founder of the NIS

LOHS Girls Head Coach 1977-2004

The 2021 Nike Interstate Shootout marked the 30th anniversary of the Lake Oswego High School tournament. Conceived by legendary Laker Head Coach Gary Lavender (1977-2004) as a 4 team tournament in 1991, the NIS grew into an 8 team format by 1995, a 16 team tournament by 1997, and finally 32 team field in 2001. It is currently a 24 team, three-bracket  tournament.

The Nike Interstate Shootout is hosted locally by the Lake Oswego High School Girls Basketball program and is considered to be a true community event as many of the local youth girls and parents help run this great event. The tournament looks to attract the best regional competition incorporating many teams from Oregon and Washington.  The mission of the Nike Interstate Shootout  is to promote regional girls basketball and to bring attention to women’s basketball around the state of Oregon.

The NIS has has proudly hosted nationally recognized teams in past years: Oakridge High School-Oakridge, Tennessee (’94); East Lake High School-Cleveland, Ohio (’95); Aragon High School-San Mateo, California (’98); Reno High School-Reno, Nevada (’03); Mater Dei High School- Santa Ana, California (’09); and St. Mary’s High-Phoenix, AZ (’10).
