This article entitled, "Bringing Back Detroit with Cookies" is one of the opinion/review articles I wrote this year. I chose this piece to represent one of my best pieces on my first year of The Hawkeye because I really enjoyed expressing my opinion throughout my writing as I have a huge interest in the new Detroit Cookie Company. During the process of writing this piece, I conducted my own feedback and opinion on the cookies and what they have to offer. I talked about what I liked and what I disliked. I also talked about the competiton between other bakeries, new flavors, and deals that are given. I also created an outline by organzing each paragraph by questions I wanted to answer throughout the review.
This article entitled, "District Vaping Ordinance Established" is one of the news articles I wrote for the May issue. I chose this story to represent some of my best work because I was really proud that my story made it to the cover page. I felt that I worked extremeley hard in order to get this piece finished while using some of the techniques I have learned from the newspaper. The process of getting in touch with officers and administration was tough as I had to respond and keep checking my email in a timely mannor, and be respectful of the information I was given. I was also given this article to write later in the process, so I had to work efficiently to get it done in the same timeline as the other stories. Overall, I believe this was one of the most mature pieces I was able to write and I was extremely proud of the outcome.
This article entitled, "Beyond Your Imagination" is another one of the opinion/review pieces I wrote for the April print issue. Again, I really enjoy disussing my opinion especially about something I really enjoy; Beyond Juice. The process of this story was easier than other stories I have written in the past because I only needed my opinion, as well as smoothie flavors, different offers from Beyond Juice, and their different locations. Another reason I chose this story is because it is visually pleasing. When I went and looked through the newspaper, this page immediently caught my eye. This is because Tropical Smoothie and Beyond Juice are both very popular resturants that people may want to read about. Adding the poll was another cool thing to see.
This piece entitled, "Holidays Deserve Their Own Moments" is also an opinion piece from the Holiday December issue. I chose this piece to represent my best work because this was the turning point in which I started to undertsand the different types of writing. This was the first opinion piece I ever wrote, and was a bit confused with the set up, outline, and interviews needed for the story. However, I ended up writing this story, at first, like a news story with three interviews. While in the editing process, my writing was completley turned upside down. Moreover, I was doing it wrong. This made me realize that asking questions and relying on your team is the biggest help and very necessary for the success of the whole team. I was also able to create bonds and make memories with some of the editors and other staff after I asked for help on the stories written after this. It really helped me undertsand the different perspectives of a journalistic writer, and I am now on the correct path to success, and helping my new fellow teammates if they make this mistake just like I did. A valuable lesson was learned from this story.
This piece entitled, "Volley for a Cure" is the Section B cover regarding sports. I chose this to represent some of my best work because this was my first story of the year and I was imagining myself to be a bit rusty at first. However, I felt that I created a story that was able to bradcast who I was as a writer as well as someone who was in the crowd of the event. I had never had the chance to write a sports story before this moment, which also meant I was never able to participate in an event that I was writing about. Throughout the process, I conducted interviews from many players, was able to go and have fun at the event myself, and learn some more about volleyball and what the purpose of the event is as a whole. That is something that was cool for me to experience.
This story entitled, "Tracing the history of TikTok" was super fun to write. I really enjoyed this piece because I wrote about something that was relevant to my life and was also able to research some history on an app that I use very often. Another thing I enjoyed about this piece was the process. Three writers, including me, got to work together and brainstorm ideas on how one topic could be split up and discussed among us. It was cool to be able to write and connect with other writers on the same page as me and my writing. The layout and structure of this page is also pleasing to look at.
This piece entitled, "Unlocking the Disney Vault" was another fun topic to write on. To be honest, I feel that this year I grew a tremendous amount and believe that all of my work shows my best effort. This topic helped broadcast my creative side and gave me a lot of room to touch on many subjects. During the process, I asked many students their opinions on the channel and some fun questions in order to incorperate a silly and calming tone to the article. I also researched a ton on the history of Disney+ which was interesting to learn about. Also, I love the layout of this page and knowing that my article was part of the center spread made me super proud of myself. I am so happy with my journey through The Hawkeye and consider writing for a newspaper a passion of mine. I am excited to see what next year holds for my writing and the paper as a whole.
This piece entitled, "Some Sweet Treats" has not been published yet because it is part of the Covid issue. However, I am so beyond proud of this piece. I was given the opportunity to start a baking column as I love to bake. This has granted me the privledge of being able to write about my opinion, tips, and recipes for baking. Throughout the process, I was able to bake the actual recipe (the most fun part), comment on the challenges throughout the baking process, give feedback on how it tasted, and incorperate the recipe. Although I have only written two articles for the column, I love being able to write about baking because it is something I have a great interest in and could talk about for so long. Once again, I am excited to see where this baking column takes me and cannot wait to hear about all of the people who try and make some of the recipes I suggest. I also can't wait to bring in some sweet treats for the class to try next year:)
