HOW TO BUILD YOUR COLLEGE APPLICATION

You college application is important to the Admissions panel. Why? It gives them information on the type of students that are applying to their institution. There are a range of things that college admissions representatives look for in applicants in order to give each and every one of their students a fair chance.

College admissions are based primarily on:

  1. Transcript
  2. SAT/ACT scores
  3. SAT Subject Test*
  4. Recommendations
  5. Extracurricular activities
  6. Essay
  7. 12th Grade/Senior Year Report Card & Schedule
  8. Talents and/ or achievements
  9. Interview*

*Scoring well on a subject test make for a more competitive application

*not all schools offer interviews

WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO START AN APPLICATIONS

Whether it's a College Application, a Financial Aid Application, or a Scholarship, the list below will give you a general overview of what you will need in order to successfully complete all of these applications.


  1. Your Social Security Number
  2. Clear Picture of Your Green Card (Front & Back) ***If you don't have a social security or green card, please speak to your College Advisor as soon as possible
  3. Your Parent's Income Tax Return ***If your parent's do not file taxes, please speak to you college advisor as soon as possible.
  4. Benefit/Food Stamps Budget Letter
  5. Any Other Proof of Income Documentation
  6. $65 for CUNY Application Fees (if ineligible for a fee waiver)
  7. Copy of Your High School Transcript
  8. Your SAT &/or SAT Subject Test Scores OR Acts w/ Writing
  9. Resume
  10. Well Written College Essay
  11. 2-3 Teacher Recommendation Letters (two from your core courses and one from your point of interest)
  12. Art Portfolio if you're applying for a Design/Fine Arts Program

TYPES OF COLLEGE APPLICATIONS

  • Regular Decision/ Admission: Non-binding decision. Although deadlines vary, most colleges set theit deadline on January 1st. Depending on the number of applications that the institution receives, they may reach out to you as soon as March. However, you do not have to commit until May 1.
  • Rolling Admissions: Non-binding decision Admissions officers will review the application as soon as the file is complete. Students are notified within two to six weeks, depending on the number of applications the institution had received. Although there are no concrete deadline for rolling admission, students are recommended to apply as early as possible before seats have been filled to its capacity.
  • Early Decision: Deadline November 1st. Binding, students applying as early decision must attend the institution. If you are accepted to a college through Early Decision, you must withdrawl all other applications. You will receive an admissions decision usually by December & send a non refundable deposit well in advance of May 1st.
  • Early Action: Deadline November 1st . Non-Binding, you'll receive an admission decision by January/February. Give to college a decision no later that May 1st.
  • Deferred Application: If you apply as either Early Decision or Early action, your application may be submitted to the pool of regular decision applications. You do not need to reapply for the college again. However, you can send additional credentials such as new SAT/ACT scores, updated report card, etc. If you're denied admission, through either option, you may not apply again to that college in that year.
