The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the form you need to fill out to get any financial aid from the federal government to help pay for college.
Completing the FAFSA form is essential to obtaining federal student aid to pay for your college or career school. Your FAFSA data will be used to determine your federal aid eligibility. Federal student aid includes grants, work-study, and loans. Many college and scholarship organizations also use FAFSA data to award financial aid. It is important for students to complete the FAFSA for every year they are enrolled in school.
General eligibility requirements include that you have financial need, are a U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen, and are enrolled in an eligible degree or certificate program at your college or career school.
If you have a “green card” (in other words, if you are considered a permanent resident), you will be considered an “eligible noncitizen” and will be able to get federal student aid if you meet the other basic eligibility criteria.
Students who do not have lawful immigration status, but have resided in the state of Colorado for at least three years before graduating from a Colorado high school can apply for state financial aid by completing the Colorado Application for State Financial Aid (CASFA).
