Lac Seul is located approximately 38 kms northwest of Sioux Lookout.
The reserve has a large base, which is bounded to the north and east by Lac Seul Lake. The reserve is made up of three (3) communities: Kejick Bay, Whitefish Bay, and Frenchman’s Head.
The Lac Seul Reserve is the oldest reserve in the Sioux Lookout District. The reserve was established pursuant to Treaty 3. By 1912, there were at least 45 homes along the shoreline of what is now referred to as Kejick Bay and Whitefish Bay. The lake was the main transportation route and an important source of food.
Sioux Lookout is the closest town with many amenities, about a 35 minute drive from Frenchman's Head. Sioux Lookout has a population of about 5000 people, and also provides services for many northern fly-in communities. Traditions and Culture
People in Lac Seul still regularly practice trapping, fishing, and hunting. There is a sweat lodge and several
churches in the community. Two of the most famous painters in North Western Ontario are from Lac Seul. There are many local craftspeople who would be happy to share their gifts and talents if you seek them out. For example, there is a person who knows how to make snowshoes and someone else who builds birch bark canoes. Sometimes there are beading activities organized by members of the community. In Frenchman’s Head, there is a
traditional museum that was started by a resident. A former trapping shack was converted to house the museum, which includes a jingle dress, arrowheads, tomahawks, and muskets, amongst other items.
