The Ocean Race is often described as the longest and toughest professional sporting event in the world, sailing’s toughest team challenge and one of the sport’s Big Three events, alongside the Olympic Games and America’s Cup.
Following the success of their ground-breaking and award-winning sustainability efforts in the last race, sustainability will continue to be a core value of the race as they go forward, as they redouble their efforts to restore ocean health and lead, inspire and engage on this critical issue.
The next edition of The Ocean Race will start from Alicante, Spain in the autumn of 2021. The sustainability section of the Ocean Race website contains some great resources as well as linking to:
The Ocean Race LEARNING: Award winning education program for 6-12 years old, currently available in French, English and Spanish. More than 100,000 children used this program to learn about the Race and Ocean health during the last edition and is has recently been sed as the template for the Sustainability Education Programme released by World Sailing in April 2020, see World Sailing resources.
The Ocean Race SCIENCE: During the last edition of several methods were used onboard the boats to capture valuable scientific data including 2 boats carrying microplastic measurement equipment. This scientific work is set to continue for the 2021/22 edition.
The Ocean Race SUMMITS: Building upon the defining legacy of the series of seven global events held during the previous edition of the race, these take place at strategically selected, international locations, with the objective to engage and inspire local audiences in order to take decisive action. To complement The Ocean Race Summits, we have introduced the Innovation Workshop concept as part of their sustainable event portfolio. The seminars challenge industry leaders and experts to explore new ways of working on a range of issues that link their value chain with ocean pollution.
Several reference documents were produced about the sustainability program during the last edition:
