My name is Kyra Jeanine Solis, I am a first generation Filipina-American and the first in my family to obtain an American degree. I am currently a senior at Texas Woman's University majoring in Health Studies with an interest in public health policy and health education/promotion. Health studies is comprehensive understanding of contemporary health issues, social determinants of health, health humanities, and the impact of policy on health and well-being. I will be graduating May of 2019 from Texas Woman's University and plan further my education through a Masters degree in Public Health focusing in public policy and management, as well as experience within the field.
I am a New Leadership Texas alumna, Public Leadership Education Network (PLEN) alumna, and the founding chapter president of IGNITE at Texas Woman's University. IGNITE works to train young women to own their political power and prepare them to become the next generation of civic and political leaders. I am a Health Education Intern at Denton County Public Health conducting qualitative research surrounding health literacy and access to health care via the facilitation of focus groups and thematic data analysis. I also perform quantitative data analysis from pre/post-intervention survey data related to health education presentations given to a population proven to have low rates of access to preventive health services. I previously worked as the Advocacy Intern at United Way Denton County, responsible for drafting the priority agenda for the 86th Texas legislative session, which will be presented within the Texas chambers in February 2019. The agenda priorities include advocating for legislation that addresses children and family success, Veteran support, adequate mental health services, and brief and nonrecurring homelessness in Denton County.
I have been featured as one of Texas Woman's University's #WomenWhoLead and Public Leadership Education Network's Student Stories, showcasing scholarly and leadership accomplishments.
I am very passionate about public health due to the impact it has on every person’s life locally, nationally, and globally. I have performed a year-long community needs assessments to determine the perceived and actual needs of my community, and have worked to develop, implement, and evaluate a health promotion program that addresses the health issues effecting my community.
I believe that health equity- access to high quality healthcare regardless of socioeconomic status, geographical location, race, religion, sexual orientation, etc. is not only an American right, but a human right. I believe in advocating for legislation that address these and other intersecting and interdependent issues.
