Overall, this Digital Engagement Project with the IISC and KYL has been an incredible learning process for our group. Right away, we discovered so much about the Kendall Young Library, which we knew little about, from visiting their facilities and researching the institution. The same can be said for learning about Webster City, which Olivia did not realize was in Iowa. Additionally, this whole project was really interesting to us because we were actually applying the practices we had learned in our "Museums in a Digital World" course to a real-life institution, and we enjoyed creating content for the Kendall Young Library to potentially use. Figuring out which types of content to create for KYL was a little difficult, as the library has only Facebook/Twitter accounts and a website, but we truly feel as if we were able to come up with and produce digital initiatives that will engage families and other individuals that visit KYL.
Both of us really enjoyed delving into research about objects in the KYL collections; while Eric found Abastentia St. Leger Eberle and her sculptures to be the most interesting collection for him, Olivia happily researched the Native American objects due to her scholarly interest in the art area. We are very happy with the content we have created and hope KYL is able to utilize our Interpretive Plan and/or the initiatives!
Additionally, throughout this whole project, we both learned tactics for both online projects as well as group projects. Originally, both of us were worried how only two people could manage such a large project for KYL. Luckily, though, the project went incredibly smoothly and productively; we were both able to create and refine our content before the deadlines without any added stress or problems. To quote Eric, "Olivia and I are kind of the power group of our class since it's only us in a group." Luckily, the two of us were incredibly interested in this project and wanted to create the most engaging content possible for KYL. Overall, we learned that online projects are not easy, especially when they involve multiple group members. However, we feel as if we tried our best and did everything to provide the library with new and exciting digital content for the library. One key to our success, we believe, is that we were really great at communicating with one another through both Skype as well as the Discussion Boards on ICON. We worked well as a team and look at what we accomplished!
We hope the Kendall Young Library enjoys our digital interpretive plan and digital content!
We would like to thank everyone who has helped us throughout this digital engagement project! Specifically, we would like to acknowledge the IISC for partnering our class with the Kendall Young Library and for providing transportation and a per diem to visit KYL in September. Additionally, we must thank KYL for hosting our class during that visit and for providing print-out information about the library and its collections as well as for answering all the questions our class had for the KYL staff. Finally, we cannot forget to acknowledge our fearless leader, Professor Lung for organizing this class, listening to our rants, answering our questions, and constantly putting out fires during this project.
