Sports Analytics

In Spring 2022, I designed and taught an Intro to Sports Analytics course for the first time. I was able to teach the course again in both Fall 2022 and Spring 2023, continuing to build and improve the course. The content is inspired by the book Mathletics (Winston, Nestler, Pelechrinis, 2022) with guided Excel sheets for different sports and technical skills and then students work in groups on a project with one of the school's in-season sports teams that involves collection of data through video tracking. analyzing data in Excel, and presenting their findings on a research poster.

I also worked with two students during the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons to track shots, possessions, and turnovers for Trinity's women's basketball team. These were tracked using video analysis and play-by-play logs and the coaches received regular updates on various stats. Trinity advanced to the Elite Eight in the 2023 Division III NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. See below for the research poster summarizing many different stats to tell the story of their fantastic season.

Sample in-class worksheet: NBA Lineups
Sample weekly assignment: Baseball Decision Making
