The Poison Book. It was the first thing I ever made for SCA purposes, as a relic for entrance into the Assassins' Guild. After I created it, we were able to take the clandestine Guild and turn it into a new level of A&S Academia. This was the beginning of my SCA Journey into Period Criminal Activities, leading to some amazing pieces.
There's this legend that a thief would take a pickled hanged man's hand, create a candle out of it, then bring it into a manor in the dead of night and light the candle—as long as the candle remained lit, the people would not wake up and the thief would rob it blind. Sounds like a tall tale....
Except they FOUND one stuck in a basement of a home in the UK that was about 100 years old in the 1910s. SO, I thought "Holy Toledo, what if I can find evidence that one existed in period, and make a replica....
And found the evidence in an early version of the Malleus Maleficarum.
So here it is.
When we first started trying to curry interest in the assassins' guild, we realized that we could give favors to the Consorts, telling them that we were theirs to command. So, starting back about 2011, I started creating these things. They were meant to be attached to the hilt of a blade or a spike, and I figured I'd make one every reign.
Then we moved to Aethelmearc, so I was making TWO a reign for both royally chartered guilds. I've also tried making them as favors for other consorts. I've made almost 2 dozen of these, some I forgot to take pics of.
I've made a bunch of scrolls for the Assassins Guild. And will probably make many more. I'm not that great at steady hands and acknowledge the difficulties I have, but this is one of those cases where it was either me or it might not have gotten done.
Note! Some of these have secret codes!
I've started getting into miniatures, becuase it's easier to transport. First one was a miniature torture chamber, figuring that I should show what happened to the assassins of yore.
For this giant display on torture I also made a "scolds' bridle". Usually created of metal (and without access to a forge) I created mine out of leather using the exact same pattern from a piece seen in one of my books.
What can I say about Jingles (we should get him an AoA with all the service he's done).
Jingles was a way to get people to participate in some of the aspects of fun Assassins' Guild stuff. Asking people to sneak up on each other and put their thumb in someone's ribs? Difficult.
Asking someone if they'd like to try their hand at pick-pocketing and get a piece of candy? THEY LOVE IT.
Even better, Jingles has gone to several Kids and Teens Parties and they loved it too.
Not based on reality, although research shows that dummies were created for fighting and fencing; it would seem that having a dummy to practice pickpocketing and such on would be possible.
