ILC Workshops I took
Leading with Empathy and Compassion
Taken on March 12th, 2025
In this workshop, I learned about several things. I learned the difference between sympathy and empathy through a short video. Sympathy in my own words would be feeling sorry or pity for someone. In a real-world example, I can understand and empathize with someone having a hard time and offer my support in a way that makes them feel better.
Practicing Servant Leadership
Taken on March 27th, 2025
In this workshop, we learned about leadership models. First, we went through the basic overview of the traditional, corporate model. We had a simulation where each member had different roles and whether or not the boss asked for the opinions of employees for events and such. It seemed like everyone was in consensus that the servant leadership model worked better. In a leadership setting, I can strive to ask others how I can serve them in any way possible in order for them to do what they need to do.
Navigating Multicultural Organizations
Taken on April 2nd, 2025
In this workshop, I gained a deeper understanding of the differences between cultural contexts and how they shape the way people interact, think, and approach problems. I realized that bringing together diverse perspectives isn’t just about representation, it creates opportunities for rich discussions, innovative ideas, and more well-rounded solutions to any challenge or project. It highlights the importance of being open-minded and willing to learn from others’ experiences.
Fostering a Culture of Feedback
Taken on April 9th, 2025
In this workshop, we learned about how to give and receive feedback, in a way that is constructive and helps someone get real results. In an interactive simulation, participants were to guide others to find certain hidden objects around the room with types of feedback. The best feedback was the encouraging feedback which uplifted the participants to find the objects while being rewarded for their efforts.
Synthesis Summary of workshops:
Through these workshops, I have gained a deeper understanding of what it truly means to be an effective and compassionate leader. From learning the difference between sympathy and empathy, I now recognize the value of genuinely understanding others' perspectives rather than simply feeling sorry for them. This shift allows me to build stronger, more meaningful relationships—whether in a professional setting or in personal life—by providing emotional support in a way that is comforting and sincere.
The concept of servant leadership expanded my view of leadership from authority to service. Rather than leading with commands, I’ve learned the power of asking, “How can I support you?” This mindset promotes trust and collaboration, creating a more inclusive and motivated team environment. Similarly, the workshop on multicultural organizations emphasized the value of diversity. Recognizing and embracing different backgrounds, perspectives, and communication styles will allow me to lead teams more thoughtfully, foster innovation, and approach challenges with a broader lens.
Lastly, learning how to give and receive constructive feedback taught me that communication is key to growth. Encouraging others with actionable and supportive feedback can inspire progress and strengthen team morale.
Together, these experiences have shaped my leadership philosophy. In my future endeavors, I will strive to lead with empathy, serve with purpose, embrace diversity, and foster open, growth-oriented communication.
Cumulative Reflection:
Self-Knowledge
The workshops helped me better understand myself by encouraging reflection and mindfulness. For example, in the empathy and feedback sessions, I became more aware of how my actions impact others, and how my emotions shape the way I respond in different scenarios. Through journaling and reflection, I’ve started to recognize moments when I drift mentally and bring myself back with intention. These workshops taught me the importance of being present and aligning my thoughts and actions with my values. Moving forward, I will continue building this competency by making self-awareness a daily habit through reflection and intentional thinking.
Relationship Management
The empathy and multicultural workshops especially improved my ability to manage relationships. I learned that understanding others' perspectives is essential to building trust and strong communication. Practicing empathy and servant leadership allowed me to better connect with people by asking thoughtful questions and actively listening. These skills helped me realize how to offer genuine support, which fosters deeper and more meaningful relationships. Now, I make an effort to understand people’s actions through their lens, not just my own. I’ll continue to develop this skill by showing curiosity toward others’ experiences and creating space for open, respectful dialogue in all relationships.
Change Management
The feedback and servant leadership workshops showed me how to embrace change with a positive mindset. Change often comes with discomfort, but I’ve learned that it also brings opportunity for growth. By experimenting with feedback styles and adapting to team dynamics during simulations, I saw firsthand how flexible leadership can lead to better outcomes. I’ve started implementing small, manageable changes in my daily habits, like improving communication or organizing my space. Over time, these build resilience. I will keep managing change by staying adaptable, setting weekly goals, and tracking my progress in order to become more grounded and consistent.
Service-Mindedness
The servant leadership workshop helped me realize that leadership is not about control—it’s about lifting others up. It reframed my thinking to ask, “How can I serve?” rather than “What can I get?” Since then, I’ve committed to doing at least one kind act daily, whether it’s helping a peer or offering encouragement. These small actions add up and create a ripple effect of positivity. Being service-minded has given me a sense of purpose and fulfillment. I will continue cultivating this mindset by staying intentional with my actions and finding ways to support and uplift others in my community.
