Leadership Certificate Program E-Portfolio
Personal Intro
Hello, my name is Kush Patel. I’m a 2nd year student from Addison, IL. I’m pursuing Finance + Data Science here at the Gies College of Business. My reason for enrolling in the Leadership Certificate Program was to get familiar with all the great opportunities the Illinois Leadership Center provides. Not only did I learn more about myself and how to apply myself in professional settings, I learned a lot about the integral values and unique perspectives of others.

Final Reflection
Looking back at my Leadership Certificate experience, I’m grateful for how much I’ve grown, not just as a leader, but as a person. Each workshop offered something new and meaningful. I felt most connected during the empathy and servant leadership sessions, where I realized that leadership isn’t about taking control but rather about listening, understanding, and supporting others. What went well was how naturally these lessons clicked with me. I found myself genuinely interested in applying them, like giving more constructive feedback or being more conscious about serving others first. One challenge I faced was learning how to fully embrace feedback, especially negative feedback, without getting defensive. But through the simulations and discussions, I realized that the way feedback is given and received can make all the difference. I also surprised myself with how quickly I began to see leadership opportunities in everyday moments, whether it was helping a classmate or reflecting on my own behaviors at the end of the day.
Through this program, I’ve grown as a leader by becoming more grounded in empathy and self-awareness. I’m now more intentional about how I interact with people and how I show up for them. I’ve learned the value of asking questions, listening deeply, and putting others’ needs at the forefront. I’ve also started journaling consistently to reflect on my thoughts and actions, which helps me stay aligned with my goals and values. I no longer view leadership as something tied to a title but more like a mindset, a way of being. I’ve become someone who can uplift others not by leading from the front, but by standing beside them.
My definition of leadership has definitely evolved. Before, I thought leadership meant being the decision-maker, the one who guides the team with direction and strength. Now, I understand it as creating space for others to shine, fostering connection, and serving with humility. Leadership is about making people feel seen, heard, and valued. It’s also about being in tune with yourself because if you don’t know what’s going on inside, it’s hard to be there for anyone else.
If I had to pick one object that represents my Leadership Certificate experience, it would be a mirror. Throughout this journey, I’ve spent a lot of time reflecting on my thoughts, my actions, and how they affect others. The mirror reminds me to check in with myself regularly, to be honest about what I see, and to make changes as needed. It also symbolizes clarity, seeing things for what they really are, without judgment. That kind of awareness, both inward and outward, is what I believe true leadership is built on.
