Last August, I came to Tokyo from Hungary to study as an exchange student at Hitotsubashi University. During my stay, I have been discovering many beautiful aspects of life in Japan. Through the Kunitachi Host Family Program, I met a wonderful local family. Together, we participated in several events over the past months, such as the Reitaisai festival at Yabo Tenmangu Shrine in September and a traditional mochitsuki celebration at New Year. On 17 February, with my host family and a handful of residents in Kunitachi, we went to the Ume Matsuri at Fuchu Kyodo no Mori. Although the cold winter air is still here, the plum blossoms already remind us of the coming of spring. In the plum garden of Kyodo no Mori, we had the chance to enjoy the flowers of ume trees in several varieties. I was especially impressed by the elegant white blossoms of Shirokaga-ume and the graceful branches of the weeping Shidare-ume. Next to the ume trees, an array of pale yellow-colored flowers of Robai, also known as wintersweet, filled the air with their sweet scent. Apparently, our human eyes were not the only ones mesmerized; small mejiro and jōbitaki were also enjoying the early springtime among the trees. After visiting the plum garden, we explored some of the traditional houses preserved in the park, dating back to the late Meiji period. Among them were the first post office of Fuchu City and a farmhouse where silkworms were once raised for silk production. The staff members were very helpful and kindly explained the history of the buildings in both Japanese and English. To conclude our visit, we enjoyed a warm bowl of udon at the park’s restaurant, sharing stories of holiday memories, favorite places we had visited, and dream destinations for the future. This day at Ume Matsuri was a nice moment to appreciate the changing seasons and reflect on the time I spent in Japan. As winter comes to an end, I will finish my semester here, and next week I will return to my home country, Hungary. I am truly grateful for this experience and the moments I have shared here. I will leave Japan with beautiful memories and the friendships of lovely people I have met.

・昨年8月、一橋大学への交換留学のため、ハンガリーから東京へ来ました。滞在中、日本の生活の美しい側面をたくさん発見しました。くにたちホストファミリープログラムを通して、素敵な地元の家族と出会いました。ここ数ヶ月、私たちは一緒に、9月の谷保天満宮の例大祭や、お正月の伝統的な餅つきなど、様々な行事に参加しました。2月17日には、ホストファミリーとくにたち市民数名と一緒に、府中市郷土の森の梅まつりに行きました。まだ冬の寒さは残っていますが、梅の花は既に春の訪れを感じさせてくれます。郷土の森の梅園では、様々な種類の梅の花を楽しむことができました。特に、白加賀梅の優美な白い花と、しだれ梅の優美な枝ぶりに感動しました。 梅の木の横では、ロウバイ（ロウバイ）の淡い黄色の花が一面に咲き、甘い香りを漂わせていました。私たちの目だけでなく、小さなメジロやジョビタキも木々の間で早春の訪れを楽しんでいました。梅園を訪れた後、公園内に保存されている明治時代後期に建てられた伝統的な家屋をいくつか見学しました。中には、府中市初の郵便局や、かつて絹生産のために蚕を飼育していた農家などがありました。職員の方々はとても親切で、日本語と英語で建物の歴史を丁寧に説明してくれました。最後に、公園内のレストランで温かいうどんをいただきながら、休暇の思い出や訪れたお気に入りの場所、将来の夢の旅行先などについて語り合いました。梅まつりでのこの日は、季節の移り変わりを味わい、日本で過ごした日々を振り返る素晴らしいひとときでした。冬が終わりに近づき、私はここでの学期を終え、来週には母国ハンガリーへ帰国します。 この経験と、ここで共有した時間に心から感謝しています。美しい思い出と、出会った素敵な人々との友情を胸に、日本を後にします (ラウラ ハンガリーからの交換留学生）
