On March 5, 2021, we made our Union official.
Here is what we hope to achieve by forming our union!
The union is pursuing a number of goals, which have been split into three separate categories or streams.
This centres around the concerns many teachers have about returning to face-to-face classes in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Initially, the university required 70-100% of communicative classes (the lessons our members teach) be conducted in-person. The union asked that teacher autonomy be considered to allow lecturers more leeway in managing their own personal risk. Ultimately, this stream of requests has now been settled, with the university now allowing up to 47% of communicative classes to be conducted online and furthermore providing a very reasonable medical exemption scheme for those who are most at risk of serious illness from a COVID-19 infection.
This is a request for secure employment for lecturers on fixed-term contracts. The union would like to see permanent unlimited muki-koyo contracts to provide job security to all our members.
These concern ‘union recognition’. These requests essentially ask the university to allow the union to operate openly and transparently on campus. This stream includes things such as the use of posters, bulletin boards and meeting rooms to allow recruitment, and the dissemination of information to new and existing members (outside of working hours).
If you were wondering why you haven’t seen us around, this is why!
