Action Items for Scholars

OVV Requirements

All OVV requirements must be completed by June 10, 2022.

Background Check & Compass Trainings

  • Compass training is assigned after the background check is complete. ​ (Please check your email for messages from Advanced Reporting​)

  • Compass training must be completed to be in the program.​ Compass trainings take 7-8 hours to complete.​ You can save your work as you go. Do a few at a time.​

  • Lab Safety training was recently added from BioRAFT​. Please look for the email about “a new Knight Scholars training” ​

  • You must email OVV to tell them when you have finished BioRAFT.​

COVID: Proof of Immunization Required​

All scholars must have completed vaccinations to participate.

  • OHSU OVV (upload your card to Environmental Health & Safety)​

  • Portland State University​

  • OHSU Oregon National Primate Research Center​

  • Your local hospital or clinic where you’ll be shadowing​


Proof of vaccination must include ​

  • your full name & date of birth​

  • the type of vaccination provided​

  • the date that each dose was administered​


Acceptable proofs of “full vaccination” include:​

  • CDC-issued vaccination card ​

  • Printed photo of a CDC-issued vaccination card.​

  • Digital photo of a CDC-issued vaccination card stored on a phone or electronic device.​

  • A digital vaccination record from your medical provider or pharmacy website or app.​

Attendance and Expectations

This is a 10-week program from June 10 and August 26.​

  • Attendance is required at all KSP scheduled activities.​

  • Total number of excused absences permitted: 3​

  • No activities are scheduled for Monday, July 4​

  • Unexcused absences and excused absences beyond 3-days result in a deduction of the final stipend payment at the rate of $108/day. ​

  • Allowances will be made for extended illnesses. COVID responses will be set by our host institutions (OHSU, PSU) and CDC and State guidelines.​

  • Prompt communication via email or by phone between the student and Knight Scholars Program staff regarding illnesses and unforeseen circumstances is expected.​

Dress Code in Science and Medicine​

  • Arrive at clinical and laboratory rotations dressed in clean clothes that cover your legs, arms, and feet. ​

    • Long Pants ​

    • Closed-toed shoes​ - Clean tennis-shoes, loafers, oxfords, flats that cover your skin, closed-toed shoes with small heels are ok. Key is that your toes are covered - this is for safety when you enter laboratory areas. Sandals are not permitted during clinical and laboratory rotations. ​

    • Tops that cover your arms and torso ​ - Belly, back, and sides must be covered, such as by a KSP t-shirt (t-shirt is recommended but not required).​ We will send out a fresh, black KSP t-shirt. Update your shirt size on the survey coming after this meeting.​ Please bring a light sweater, light jacket, or overshirt to your placements (clinics and labs can be cold).​

  • Long hair should be pulled into a pony-tail, braided, or in a bun. No hats please.​

  • Know your host’s masking requirements and be prepared to wear masks covering your nose and mouth.​

  • Avoid loose and flowing clothing. Particularly important in laboratory environments where clothing may get caught.​

Dorm Life at PSU

  • Proof of COVID vaccine due at Check-In​

  • Scholars will be paired with a roommate​

  • Portland Streetcar is free with PSU or OHSU badge​

The Summer Housing Handbook describes rules and resources for staying in the dorms.

  • For example: Bed linens are provided.​ Describes how/where to do laundry​. Parking is limited on campus. How to get a parking permit if needed (order in advance).​

  • Smoking (including vaping or e-cigarettes) is prohibited on campus and inside campus buildings (both at PSU and at OHSU). No incense or candles are allowed in the dorms.​

Meals

Meal Plan Included for 14 meals per week​.

  • Immersion: on weekdays, KSP will provide the 3rd meal during the two-week stay at PSU​

  • Intensive: weekday options include snacks in our KSP huddle room, b.y.o. brown-bag lunches, or other options on the South Waterfront.​

  • If guests have any special dietary requirements, they should inform Summer Housing and Conferences at least 14 days in advance of check-in so the request may be submitted to dining services. ​

  • If guests have questions about food ingredients or preparation, they should speak with a dining services staff member. ​

Weekdays​

    • Breakfast (7:00 am. to 9:00 am)​

    • Lunch (11:00 am to 1:00 pm)​

    • Dinner (5:00 pm to 7:00 pm)​

Weekends (and holidays):​

    • Brunch (11:00 am to 1:00 pm)​

    • Dinner (5:00 pm to 7:00 pm)​

Stipend Disbursement Schedule

All participants in the Knight Scholars Program receive a stipend of $5,400*.​ Participants will receive this is three disbursements:​

  • End of Week 1: $1,450​

  • End of Week 4: $1,450​

  • End of Week 10: $2,500*​

*The final disbursement will be dependent on full participation, attendance, and completion of all required assignments by the due date.​ To receive the stipend, student must be a U.S. citizen, permanent U.S. resident or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) eligible. A DACA applicant must have an employment authorization card via USCIS.​

Program Evaluation

The Knight Scholars Program is evaluated using:

  • Pre-surveys (survey link is sent by email a week before the training program begins. Please complete prior to arrival.

  • Focus group (last day of the training program; group discussion with external evaluator)

  • Post-surveys (survey link is sent on the last day of the training program begins).

In addition, we will be using photovoice and reflections to understand what is working for scholars.
