4. Understanding Algorithms

In this unit you will be looking at the impact of algorithms on our lives and comparing algorithms for searching and sorting for efficiency. We will start off my watching a documentary called the Secret Rules of Modern Algorithms and you will be asked to write up a response to this documentary. Next, you will dig deeper into some algorithms for searching and sorting and learn how you might compare the differences between each type in terms of advantages and disadvantages and comparing efficiencies.

Define the term ‘Algorithm’
Be able to identify a number of different algorithms that are impacting upon our lives
Explain the advantages and disadvantages to humans of algorithms controlling every day functions.

2. Comparing the efficiency of algorithms: searching

Understand that searching is a key algorithm in Computer Science
Be able to describe the difference between linear and binary searches and compare for efficiency.
Depict the differences between the two searches with examples using presentation software and animation features.

Be able to describe the difference between bubble and bucket sorts and compare for efficiency.
