I develop a course for the Information Systems & Technology staff. This was my first opportunity to create a course on the professional level. I credit my experience in the professional and technical writing program to the successful development of my creative intelligence and design thinking course. My manager also collaborated with me and guided me along the way, but I did the heavy lifting.
During the 10-week internship at ABCBS I had the responsibility of creating a 3-hour instructor-led course from start to finish. The course provided an introduction to creative intelligence and design thinking. The first 3 weeks of the internship was completely devoted to research and the development of a course outline. My research skills from graduate school helped me find the best sources of information.
Once the outline was revised and approved I moved to creating the facilitator guide. The facilitator guide provides instructions for the activities and the main talking points so the instructor can stay on track. Theory of Technical Communication and Writing Software Documentation taught me how to write clear and concise instructions which directly translated to the facilitator guide.
The PowerPoint (PPT) was also a major part of the course creation. Due to the complexity of our PowerPoint it took at least 2-3 weeks to finalize it. Creating and choosing the right graphics was important because they needed to increase comprehension and engagement while still being licensed for reuse. We also used the animation features on PPT to create engagement. My courses Theory of Tech Comm and Digital Nonfiction taught me how to incorporate interactivity into my presentations to increase both engagement and comprehension. My supervisor Jon Keck also taught me tricks for increasing engagement with visual stimulation and design conventions.
Note: Please download and view in PowerPoint for the full effect from animations. Google's formatting may make the preview render incorrectly.
My course outline doesn't look like much at first glance, but a lot of work went into it. Since my course was created from scratch I was responsible for developing the course curriculum. I spent multiple weeks researching design thinking and creative intelligence. I used the SkillSoft database as well as some well known books on creative intelligence by Michael Michalko. My supervisor and I felt that IDEO's and Stanford D School's design thinking methodology worked the best for the IS&T staff at Blue Cross. Stanford's design school offers free resources for people interested in learning about design thinking.
I had a minimal understanding of the IS&T staff's daily work and their culture, so I had to rely on my supervisor’s feedback for revisions. We worked closely together during the ideate stage and the revision stage of my design process.
The outline includes the main topics of the course. It also includes the discussion starters and activities.
