Deer hunting is a passion that I enjoy with my family and close friends. Every year when fall arrives, you will see me scrambling to spend as much time as possible in a tree stand or scouting. This is a brief journal from my hunts.
We hunted the Pee Dee National Wildlife Refuge in 2024. Good hunt. We spotted several nice deer but none were harvested.
11/18/23 was the Gun Deer opening day and my daughter Maggie and son Gus joined me for a hunt in northern Wisconsin. We hunted together opening day with a friend of the family. In the early afternoon we did a noisy push to drive deer towards our friend who placed a perfect broadside shot at 25yrds to bag a fine buck. We all helped in field dressing and we enjoyed to hunt together.
10/28/22 - 11/6/22. Great time hunting with my son Gus. Gus was able to harvest his first deer with a crossbow. Also, he was able to fill his fall turkey permit. This was a fantastic hunt. We saw deer every day. During the hunt, I was able to shoot a smaller buck but we were unable to recover the deer before coyotes and bears managed to locate the carcass. It managed to provide them with several meals.
Hunting in Douglas County, Wisconsin with my father, brother, and good friend. We harvested a buck and a doe during the archery season. Weather was in the 50's and 60's with dry conditions. Deer were very active. My 77 year old father harvested a nice buck at 20 yrd from a ground blind. Well done Dad.
Gus was fortunate to have a successful youth hunt. We spent a great day hunting in Richmond County, North Carolina during the 2021 youth deer hunting season. The setup was a large corn field. Temps were in the '70s. Could not locate the deer that evening, the next morning we found it right away. 17' inside. 10pts. 140 class. 243 Winchester, CVA Hunter rifle.
4 bagger freezer fill trip. Richmond County, North Carolina October hunt. Opening day of rifle season. 5 deer presented and harvested 4 of them. Most shots were 125yd - 200 yds. Less than 15 seconds. Practice is essential for quick shots. We were stocking up the freezer.
Maggie scored on a North Carolina draw hunt. Northampton County, North Carolina. Single shot at dusk. Spike buck. 243 Winchester, CVA Hunter rifle. North Carolina draw hunts are quality opportunities.
2016 was a tough year for hunting with the relocation from Wisconsin to North Carolina. Was not able to hunt while focused on getting the family settled and addressing the challenges of the pre-holiday peak preparation for running www.lowes.com
9:30 AM opening day of Wisconsin Gun Deer season. Chippewa County, Wisconsin, family property. Small rack, large body 6pt. Neck shot 125yrd shot. This was the 15th deer spotted that morning. Ruger 77 Mark II chambered in 7mm Remington Mag, with Leupold Vari-X III optics.
Freezer fill trip to Gordon, Wisconsin
Opening day. 12:35 pm. 8pt. Douglas County, Wisconsin. First shot was a broadside standing shot at 75yds. The gun went "click". ( empty chamber). After a quick reload, the second shot was on its mark. 1.5 mile drag.
2:30 PM on a sunny, warm during a late October bow hunt during the Wisconsin archery season. Was kneeling on the ground, wearing that red shirt and hat, blowing a grunt call. The buck appeared at 35 yrs broadside fast walking. My first shot missed the deer and spooked it. After a few more mins of calling the deer returned, to the same spot in a fast walk. My second shot was far back. Dead center to the hind quarters. The deer was recovered 30 mins later, a mere 50 yrs from the spot.
8:30 AM opening day of the Wisconsin Gun Deer Season. Douglas County. Taken in former game management unit 4, near Waterbury Rd, Solon Springs, Wisconsin. 10pts, heavy bodied buck.
Wednesday and Thursday of the 1991 Wisconsin Gun Deer Season. Hunted the morning with my father Burma Road off Buckety Creek. 9:30 am, a bird hunter on the opposite side of the creek disturbed the buck which was bedded on the side I was on, the deer walked through heavy aspen regrowth in a cutover 75 yrs to my left. The last of 4 shots struck him low in the chest. I trailed the deer for 4 solid miles, crossing roads, the paths of other hunters, etc. Finally stopping at a county highway. ( I found me bearings and marked the location ). Then I had to walk the entire route back to my father finally meeting him in the woods at 445pm, dusk. We returned the next day and located the deer, bedded just 75 yrds the opposite side of the road where I stopped.
