Kodi Rasmussen is a Wellington-based composer whose work spans orchestral, brass, theatre, and screen music. A graduate of the New Zealand School of Music at Victoria University of Wellington, Kodi holds a Bachelor of Music with a double major in classical trumpet performance and instrumental/vocal composition. His studies were guided by prominent New Zealand musicians including Michael Norris, Salina Fisher, Ewan Clarke, Mark Carter, and Shannon Pittaway, and he was recognised on the Dean’s List for academic excellence in his final year.
Kodi’s music has been performed and recorded by leading ensembles such as the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, the New Zealand String Quartet, Wellington Brass Band, and the National Youth Brass Band. His style is marked by rich textures, emotional clarity, and a deep sense of narrative, often blending classical traditions with contemporary influences. In 2020, he was awarded the Orchestra’s Choice Award at the Todd Young Composer’s Competition for his orchestral writing.
In recent years, Kodi has broadened his work into theatre and screen. He composed the full score for Too Bald Clowns, a TV comedy series, and wrote the music for the award-winning stage show Delightfool, recently featured at the NZ Comedy Festival. He also serves as resident composer for various creative groups and has contributed as a project manager and artistic advisor, overseeing multidisciplinary performances and collaborative productions.
Alongside his creative output, Kodi works as a freelance arranger, orchestrator, and typesetter, primarily for brass bands and chamber ensembles. He is also an experienced performer, playing regularly with Wellington Brass Band, and has been active as a conductor and tutor for youth ensembles throughout New Zealand.
He is currently developing a range of projects across stage and screen while preparing for an international move to Europe in 2026 to expand his practice and continue building collaborative, cross-genre work.
When not composing, Kodi enjoys mountain biking, craft beer, and documenting creative journeys. He remains committed to telling stories through music that are grounded, expressive, and resonant with the world around him.
