Discussions of mental health & illness, suicidal ideation, bullying
Charlotte, often nicknamed 'Charlie' or 'Charles', was Madison's best friend during her childhood, and is one of the side characters of the 'past' half of Cosmic Clockwork. Maddie doesn't remember much about her, just that she was a quiet kid who'd mysteriously disappeared halfway through the school year.
Charlie's had it... rough, to say the least. Seen as an incompetent, emotionally over-sensitive, cry-baby, stupid, crazy freak-show by her classmates for many things; her dual-coloured appearance & cloven hooves, her odd obsession with botany despite not knowing how to do gardening herself, tendency to play with dirt, talk to plants, as well as flick flies away with her tail, social awkwardness, emotional sensitivity, and her lack of interest or knowledge in whatever the other kids are doing- she's been subject to a heavy amount of ridicule & bullying by her peers. A particularly nasty rumour's even spread that she's secretly an alien who's going to infect whoever touches her.
Charles was passively suicidal as a result of being, you know, a complete social outcast; but didn't do anything at first, until a school bully, Kasie, shoved her off the school roof. Maddie thought she'd simply moved away. Having realised the truth of what had happened to her friend, & now actually being aware & around enough to do something about it, the timeswapped Madison tries to save her.
❤️Personality
Shy, quiet, non-confrontational. She's scared of being picked on more than she already is, thus tends to keep her head down in order to avoid more conflict- which also means that she never really asks for help, in fear of being seen as stupid like others say. But despite her lack of words, there's a lot going on in her head; for better or worse. But being so heavily isolated & excluded as a result of everything hasn't exactly improved her abysmal social skills, either; only making her more & more 'separate' from everyone else, as time goes on.
Her anxiety also means she has a tendency to assume the absolute worst case scenario; having already decided her life was as good as over before it's even really begun. She's so used to people speaking negatively about her, that she assumes everyone's going to do the same; leading to her being internally snarky, bitter, & rough-around-the-edges in preparatory response, even when nothing's actually happened.
She fears the idea of growing up, & personally doesn't expect to survive into her teen years, much less adulthood. What if everyone was right about her? She's never going to make it. If being a kid is supposed to be the best years of her life, and these so-called 'best years' aren't even all that great, then why should she grow up? Is she only worth loving if she's a kid? Will her family kick her out when she's older & realises she's so useless? Can't she just... say goodbye & stay a happy memory to those that still care about her?
She's been getting more reckless with her safety lately, as well as purposefully letting her grades slip; as if she's not trying. She's not actively seeking out trouble, but won't fight back or run if trouble comes to her. It's not like any of it matters when she's so sure she won't have a future to face the consequences, anyway.
Surely, there's nothing to be worried about, right?

Madison: Charlie & Maddie have known each other since kindergarten, sticking together as best friends, ever since. But recently, they've started... drifting apart, a little. Maddie's been getting really into space, while Charlie's more interested in plants; & they're both getting too old for silly games like playing pretend, aren't they? Maddie clearly knows who she wants to be in the future; while Charlie feels inferior for still stumbling around in the dark. She puts Madison on a pedestal & sees her the same way she sees the school prefects- supposedly her peer, yet so distant & inhumanely grown-up. Something to respectfully fear, than really hang out with.
While they might've been self-proclaimed 'best friends', they weren't really close. They considered each other friends in the sense that neither of them had anyone else to talk to, latching together in a sort of weird solidarity, despite the lack of much else in common. It's a friendship born of circumstance & familiarity, not interest. Charles wants to be actual friends with Maddie- actually, she'd settle for having any actual friend- but doesn't think it's likely.
Besides, she's getting the sense that Madison doesn't really care for her. She's probably just friends with her out of either obligation, pity, or possibly to betray & make fun of her eventually. It's not like Maddie ever listens to whatever Charlie has to say, right? It's clear that her friend's shaping up to be something brilliant, while Charles... isn't. Madison doesn't deserve someone like her, dragging her down, does she?
After being saved from falling down a building by Madison, then moving away & losing contact with her for over two decades while Charlie recovered; imagine her surprise when her old childhood friend reached out, trying to reconnect. While they're not close & barely know a thing about each other these days, they do try to keep in touch- & honestly? Charlie's pretty glad to know she hasn't been forgotten. ...Or that somebody else is glad that she's still kicking.
🔬Random Facts
Her name is a play on the term "Childhood Friend".
While Gloonsters normally have single-coloured fur when they're young, gaining patterns on their coat as they grow older; Charles already has two colours as a somewhat intense form of puberty! She's an early bloomer! Her fur being so heavily affected is basically the Gloonster equivalent of acne. ...which she sadly gets bullied for, even though there's honestly nothing she has to be ashamed of.
Has a country accent; "I don't reckon ya actually know where you're goin', do ya?" "We ain't supposed to go there!" "Ya doin' alright?"
DON'T WORRY; EVEN IN THE ORIGINAL TIMELINE SHE NEVER ACTUALLY DIED. She just got hella injured & moved to the countryside with her parents to get therapy + recovering at the hospital + because her parents figured that hmm maybe being in the same school as someone who tried to push her off a building wasn't a good idea. Madison meets up with her in the epilogue.
The thing with her talking to plants is based on something I actually did when I was in Primary School! I used to march around the backgarden during recess & ordered plants around, pretending to be a drill sergeant. (Charles is... a lot gentler with plants than I ever was, lol)
She's almost exclusively referred to as Charles by the WUTCC narration & Maddie's dialogue, as it's reflective of Madison's thoughts & how she still just sees her as her innocent childhood friend! This stops during the rooftop confrontation scene later on; the narration now referring to her as Charlotte, meaning her name pun doesn't work anymore, reflecting how Madison's finally come to see her as not only a little kid, but also a person with her own struggles.
