Student X, faced significant challenges coming from their home environment. The student comes from a low-income family with verbal abuse and lack of support and compassion from both parents, the student dealt with deep emotional abuse that affected many aspects of their academic journey.
This student's academic performance was impacted by the lack of a home support system. With the constant verbal abuse and the absence of a supportive family structure, I was not surprised that focusing on studies became a daunting task for them. Their behavior in class reflected their struggles, they often exhibited signs of withdrawal. However, they never acted out in response to the overwhelming stress they carried in my class. This was not the same with this student in their other classes unfortunately. Their motivation to work hard on their assignments was lacking due to their mindset being drained by items outside of school. The negativity they experienced at home, resulted in a lack of enthusiasm and drive for self betterment.
In our school setting, it was important to provide the student with a safe and supportive environment where they could find empathy and encouragement. To address their difficulties, I tried various strategies trying to nurture their emotional well-being while also trying to help improve their academic progress. Creating a trusting relationship with the student was the most important goal, as it allowed me to understand their needs and offer personalized support for their unfair circumstances at home. Providing access to resources via our guidance department such as counseling services through our social worker played a crucial role in helping them navigate their challenges and work towards their personal goals and self worth.
With collaboration with other teachers that have this student enrolled in their classes and also including community partners, this turned out to be an important step in supporting student success. This helped create an open communication and created an internal support system inside the school. We created a trusting and caring support network to address the needs of the student. Using the community resources such as Children's Aid Society and mentorship program Big Brothers further assisted in our efforts in providing support to the student.
Assessment and differentiation was important in monitoring the students' progress and provided feedback to guide the students academic and emotional growth. Using different assessment methods created for their individual learning styles and pace, I was able gauge their understanding and identify areas that required additional support. Differentiating instruction to accommodate their unique needs ensured that they received the necessary scaffolding to overcome challenges and to help them academically.
Creating higher expectations while inside my classroom and a culture of positive attitudes in the classroom required a delicate balance. By setting clear expectations and communicating that I believe in the student's potential, I was able to help them create a sense of confidence and self-worth. Trying to always promote a growing mindset and a willingness to grow in the face of adversity. Remembering to celebrate the small victories and providing constructive feedback helps reinforces positive behaviors and fosters a sense of accomplishment for them. This contributes to a supportive and empowering classroom environment conducive to student success.
I have prepared a PowerPoint presentation video aimed at parents, providing them with essential information about our technology department. In the video, I've set the slides to last only 5 seconds each for demonstration purposes, but I'll adjust the timing accordingly for the actual presentation.
Attached is a PDF sheet displaying the slides. One modification I plan to make is to create a presentation for specific events. For example, during the Grade 8 open house night, I'll focus on showcasing the Grade 9 and 10 programs, along with relevant information about the Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) for long term goals.
I have used https://imgflip.com/ to create the memes attached. The memes will be used for my stop motion, Photoshop and broadcasting assignments. Bitmoji was used to create my own emoji.
Two online resources related to privacy and online safety
Online resources related to privacy and online safety are crucial for educators to stay informed and ensure the safety of their students. Two resources online are Common Sense Media (https://www.commonsensemedia.org/) and National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) (https://staysafeonline.org/). These sites help keep students safe online and help parents with resources to address topics that are new to them.
Common Sense Media is a nonprofit organization that provides education and helps families to promote safe technology and media use for children. They offer free reviews of movies, TV shows, apps, games, and books, along with articles and guides on digital citizenship and online safety.
The National Cyber Security Alliance is a nonprofit organization that works with government and other nonprofit partners to promote cybersecurity awareness and education. They offer resources to help families and organizations stay safe and secure online.
Introducing these resources from Common Sense Media and the National Cyber Security Alliance, will help increase our students online safety and help parents ensure their students online safety. These sites provide tools to address the challenges of digital citizenship and cybersecurity.
Camera Shots Lesson - Lesson Plan
The Camera Shots lesson plan helps teach students different camera techniques used in television and movies. The lesson helps students recognize the important visual codes such as long shots, medium shots, and close-ups. It helps them understand how these techniques affect meanings in visual media.
Impressions of the website used:
I was not aware of the website MediaSmarts. MediaSmarts is a Canadian organization that is focused on media literacy in education. This is a valuable resource for teachers that provides lesson plans, instructional aids, and activities for students. The lesson plan provided is well-structured and easy to follow. It covers different camera techniques and talks about the importance in visual storytelling. They use group activities and discussions to help engage all students.
Addressing privacy and safety in the comm tech classroom:
Discussions on privacy and safety in the comm tech classroom is very important, considering all of the digital media production and consumption that our students use. I would discuss ethical considerations by allowing students to understand the ethical implications of media production and distribution, by obtaining consent for using others' images or content and respecting copyrights.
I have created a Google Slides presentation and narrated it to cover Cyber bullying, Identity Theft, Phishing Scams, Online Predators, and Data Breaches.
