My journey started after completing secretarial school and began working in a mid-size law firm. I discovered quickly that I loved the work but didn't care much for attorneys.Â
My favorite areas of law were real estate, estate planning and probate law. Forty years ago when I entered the field, double digit inflation hit the country. People with savings invested in CDs and other sources of investments, made a tidy sum. Others pursuing the American dream struggled trying to purchase a home.
I think my love for the law came from my ability interact with and help people. The attorneys I worked with were there to provide sound legal counsel and assist with complicated legal matters.
My job was to assist in answering phones, be a sounding board for clients in need of voicing their concerns, draft legal documents and organize the piles of paperwork involved in legal proceedings. Little did I know it would be in 20 cardboard cartons of legal documents and correspondence that I would find my niche.
Apparently, I became a "paralegal" one day (at least for the firm's billing purposes), and assigned the tasks of sorting through boxes of documents for foreclosed commercial properties that had been being built around the country that our client held construction loans on.
I spent the next two weeks going through boxes of appraisals, correspondence, and loan documents which were tossed into boxes with no rhyme or reason. I set up a filing system for each of the 12 foreclosed properties which were uniform and organized.
The client hired our firm to organize the documentation, evaluate the contents, and come up with a plan on how to recoup their investment for each foreclosed property. One of partners in the firm met with the client after the first project was organized to review the file and make recommendations.
During that meeting our client changed the game plan deciding to have the "paralegal" complete the filing and organization process and have all projects returned for their in house legal counsel to review. The office manager told me I had done my job so well, the partner was fired.
Since that time, I have assisted family, friends, and clients organize financial and legal documents. In some instances, an individual may have been faced with a death in the family, tax audit, or divorce. Other times, my services have been used to help clients set up filing systems and get their finances in order.
My knowledge and attention to detail allows me to help clients collect and organize their documents for budgeting, estate planning and various other purposes. I cannot and will not provide an individual with legal or financial advice or services. Only an attorney or licensed financial planner is equipped to do so.
