The Registrar’s Office will register each student for a study abroad placeholder course at 12-credit hours. This is a placeholder course which shows that you are still a full-time student at the University of Illinois. After we receive your transcripts from your host institution, the placeholder will still appear on your schedule but for 0 hours and the courses you take abroad will be transferred for credit with appropriate sections, course number, and title for course articulations for degree requirements/credits.
Students will be automatically enrolled in LAS 291/292.
Students must enroll in a sufficient amount of courses directly at the host university to be considered a full-time student. This must convert to a minimum of 12 UIUC credit hours.
Students are also allowed to register for up to 1 Illinois online courses at no additional cost. This does not count toward your full-time status at your host university.
Students will be notified via email about the instructions for course registration in early August (for fall semester) and early February (for spring semester). Students should do the following steps after receiving the email.
Step 1. Read the course registration instructions very carefully.
Step 2. Make a preferred course listing during the ‘Preferred Course Listing’ period.
Step 3. Check the results.
Step 4. Apply for the courses during the course registration period.
Step 5. Try to add the course during the Add/Drop period.
*** No changes can be made after Add/Drop period ends
Students may refer to the course list from the corresponding semester of the previous year as it will remain similar. However, courses are subject to change every semester, and we cannot guarantee their availability. Students are responsible to make a backup plan for their course plan.
It is important that you ensure that your intended courses will be offered in your registered semester. The list of courses offered in English is updated and available for you to check online in January for spring semester and in July for fall semester.
