Koen is an Associate Professor at the Dept. of Intelligent Systems, Tilburg University, and Senior Research Affiliate at the Donders Institute for Brain Cognition and Behaviour, Center for Cognitive Neuroimaging. He graduated from the University of Groningen in Artificial Intelligence (MSc) and obtained his PhD in Visual Neuroscience at the Department of Ophthalmology of the University Medical Center Groningen. Part of his PhD research was conducted at Stanford University (US) and the University of York (UK). After his PhD, Koen joined the lab of Steve Engel as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Minnesota to study the limits of neuronal adaptation using immersive virtual reality, and then returned to the Netherlands to join the Statistical Imaging Neuroscience group led by Christian Beckmann at the Donders Center for Cognitive Neuroimaging. He obtained a prestigious VENI fellowship from the Netherlands Organisation of Scientific Research (NWO) in 2016, and a NWO VIDI fellowship in 2020. His research focus involves investigations into the organisation of human visual cortex, cortical plasticity in health and disease, as well as novel data-analytical approaches for the analysis of (big) neuroimaging data.
