Kodomo Dojo
judo in school
A very warm welcome to our group.
We are a sports group promoting martial arts and active participation, predominantly in Judo. We are based at Forrest Hill School on the North Shore of Auckland, where Nurturing Growth for a Life Time of Learning is the school vision that we have also adopted.
KODOMO DOJO - More than just a Judo club!
Kodomo students learn more than just judo techniques. Our sessions recognize the importance of physical literacy, and every session develops physical activity in some way.
“Physical literacy is the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge, and understanding to value and take responsibility for engagement in physical activities for life.”
We also recognize that learners bring different skills to the tatami and we have a variety of equipment and activities to engage and give the judoka a choice in how they develop their skills. In our last session, we had hoops and our belts to skip with and to move our feet, legs, and bodies - all great activities to take into Judo. And of course, break falls - and being confident to fall to the tatami - are a part of every session - in some way!
Judo is about education for life. This was the original philosophy of the founder of Judo, Jigoro Kano.
Through Judo you will learn that you are more capable than you first thought - Building your confidence and self awareness.
You will learn how to fall safely, how to get up and try again, and learn self control and respect for those you work with.
You will be held down on the mats by a partner. You will learn co operation to work on escapes, with you and your partner taking turns as uke and tori.
You will have fun - learning is about enjoying what you do and our games based approach develops knowledge and skills alongside teamwork, physical fitness, improving focus, developing positive attitudes about sports in general, and increasing self-esteem, self-discipline, self-respect, and courtesy toward others.
Our training sessions are as follows.
Junior Judo: Tuesday 5 pm to 6 pm (FHS Hall).
Intermediate Judo: Tuesday 6 pm to 7 pm (FHS Hall).
We Judo focus utilises the teaching and grading syllabus following Judo New Zealand progressions. We believe in, and promote developing confidence and co ordination to move, roll, participate, practice self control and and have fun while remaining active through regular physical activity as fundamental life skills.
Kodomo means children in Japanese.
