Hello everyone! My name is Harini Krishnan. I created KnowItNow as a rising junior in Florida after realizing the urgent need for civic literacy, especially starting in our youth.
Growing up, my favorite class has always been history. Learning about how our nation's laws have changed over time, has always piqued my interest. Subsequently, I have also noticed the lack of understanding many have for their rights in the present day.
After doing some research, I found that according to the Florida Department of Education, only 50% of 7th-grade students in the state of Florida have passed the Civics EOC. Moreover, A comprehensive study from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation reveals that over 70% of Americans fail a basic civic literacy test on topics like the three branches of government, the number of Supreme Court justices, and other basic functions of our democracy. Just half were able to correctly name the branch of government where bills become laws. (U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation). These alarming statistics are what made me realize the urgent need for increased education on civic literacy.
I strongly believe that knowing our rights is how we protect ourselves and create change in our communities. KnowItNow aims to address the deficiency in civic literacy and build a brighter future for our nation, and future generations.
Hi! My name is Khechari Maddipatla, and I’m currently a sophomore at Strawberry Crest High School. As Vice President of Know It Now, I help lead our mission to educate and empower young people and community members to know and stand up for their rights.
I first became interested in civic rights because I saw how many students, especially people my age, weren’t always aware of the basic freedoms they have or how to use their voice to make change. Whether it’s knowing what to do when your rights are challenged at school, understanding the power of protest, or navigating issues like voting, free speech, or equal access, I believe that everyone deserves clear, accessible information that gives them confidence and control.
In my role as Vice President, I help lead student outreach, organize educational events, and support campaigns that promote awareness around important civic issues. I also work closely with our team to create resources, manage communications, and build partnerships with schools and other youth organizations. My goal is to make civic education more accessible, especially for young people who are just starting to find their voice in the world.
I’m particularly passionate about topics like freedom of speech, student rights, protest safety, and equal access to education. I believe that understanding your rights isn’t just about knowing the rules. It’s about recognizing your power and knowing how to use it in positive and meaningful ways. I hope to continue using my voice to support my community, create change, and inspire others to speak up and get involved. I believe that when young people come together with purpose, knowledge, and courage, we can make a real difference.
