Inspired by scouting patch programs, use the steps below to have your scouts/members in your troop/group earn a printable certificate by memorizing 2 phone numbers and spreading the message of K2N to others.
STEP 1: PERMISSION AND INFORMATION FORM
Get parent/guardian permission for child to participate and the two phone numbers they want their child to memorize. Use the provided PDF file to print, type your own form, or create a Google Form to electronically collect the information.
STEP 2: MEMORIZE TWO PHONE NUMBERS
Select a Teaching Activity (or multiple Teaching Activities) that best fits your group’s capabilities, resources and budget. Use your troop/group’s meeting to practice the Teaching Activity/Activities.
Suggestions:
Supply Teaching Activity items be taken home to further practice, such as “Post It Until You Know It” sticky notes.
Follow up at your next meeting to ensure the phone numbers are memorized. If not, repeat Teaching Activity, pick new Teaching Activity, and recommend Teaching Activity practice at home.
STEP 3: TAKE K2N TO THE NEXT LEVEL (optional)
Help spread the word to keep everyone safe by choosing as many (we encourage 2) of the following NEXT LEVEL TASK OPTIONS for your troop/group to do:
1. NEXT LEVEL TASK OPTION #1 - Pledge to Tell 2 People
Have each scout/member of your troop/group pledge to tell 2 more people outside the group about the K2N initiative, explain why it’s important to have 2 phone numbers memorized, and encourage them memorize 2 numbers. Use this PDF handout to help recall assignment details and collect names to show troop/group leader completion of task.
2. NEXT LEVEL TASK OPTION #2 – Create an outdoor or indoor floor keypad
Create an outdoor or indoor floor keypad for others to use to help them memorize their own 2 phone numbers. If necessary, seek permission to create any permanent or long-term installation. Use exterior paint or other suitable paint for playgrounds or other outdoor locations; use masking tape, duct tape, or Cricut vinyl for indoor locations. Display this PDF guide or create your own guide nearby to share information about the K2N initiative, explain why it’s important to have 2 phone numbers memorized, and instructions on how to use the floor keypad.
3. NEXT LEVEL TASK OPTION #3 – Create a portable indoor floor keypad
Create a portable indoor floor keypad to gift to another troop/group to use. Use atarp or other foldable/durable material and masking tape, duct tape, permanent marker or Cricut vinyl for lines and digits. Include this PDF guide or create your own guide to share information about the K2N initiative, explain why it’s important to have 2 phone numbers memorized, and instructions on how to use the floor keypad.
4. NEXT LEVEL TASK OPTION #4 – Write an experience or situation
Write an actual experience or imagined situation of when it would be important to have 2 phone numbers memorized. Provide a realistic goal for your troop/groups' age and capabilities: sentence, paragraph, etc. (Alternatively, verbally share an experience or situation at circle time.)
5. NEXT LEVEL TASK OPTION #5 – Decorate a bulletin board
Decorate a bulletin board to display in a public setting (school, house of worship, library, etc.) to encourage others to Know 2 Numbers.
Suggestions to include:
the Know 2 Number’s website, why it’s important to Know 2 Numbers, the K2N slogan (“Safety Starts with Memory…Know 2 Numbers!”), the list of all the Teaching Activities, pictures of your group demonstrating Teaching Activities, each member’s brief written experience/situation of when they didn’t have a phone number (refer to Next Level Task #4).
6. NEXT LEVEL TASK OPTION #6 – Create a video
Create a Public Service Announcement style or skit video to be shown on your group’s social media and/or in a public setting (school, house of worship, library, etc.) to encourage others to Know 2 Numbers. Suggestions to include: the Know 2 Number’s website, why it’s important to Know 2 Numbers, the K2N slogan (“Safety Starts with Memory…Know 2 Numbers!”), the list of all the Teaching Activities, pictures of your group demonstrating Teaching Activities, each member’s brief written experience/situation of when they didn’t have a phone number.
7. NEXT LEVEL TASK OPTION #7 – Create a presentation
Give a Public Service Announcement style or skit presentation to encourage others to Know 2 Numbers. Perform for another troop/group within or outside your organization, an elderly care group (retirement community, assisted living), opening to a public library or school assembly/program, etc.
STEP 4: AWARD CERTIFICATE
Award each scout/member with a certificate of participation. See the attached PDF file to print or use as inspiration to create your own certificate. (Optional: Award each scout with a skills themed fun patch for their uniform from your favorite patch supplier.)
