Since opening its doors in 1997, the Klahowya Drama department has presented two to three plays each year. Auditions for the Fall play begin the second week in September, and musical tryouts right after Winter holiday break. Depending on the year, an additional production follows with auditions the second week of March. Tryouts are open to all students, grades seven through twelve. An average of thirty to fifty students participate in each show, either as an actor or production member. Singing, acting, dancing, carpentry, set building, costuming, sound and lighting are just a few of the areas of opportunity for students to develop their theatre skills.
Six years ago the Klahowya drama department began entering the spring musical in Seattle’s Fifth Avenue High School Musical competition. Each year, Klahowya’s shows have been recognized in multiple categories. Choreography, set design, individual actors and actresses, educational impact award, and outstanding ensemble are a few of the nominations and awards for excellence presented to KSS.
Students and volunteers wanting to be involved can contact the director, Jacqueline Levenseller through the school or Klahowya Performing Arts web site.
