The IA is a max 3000 word/10 hour investigation in physics open to student interest. It should involve IB curricular concepts, it is not an EE so it doesn't need to extend the curriculum but it should be at an appropriate level. The 10 hours is not all lab-time and is a recommendation for the time spent on it but not a mandatory value.
The word count does not include: Charts, Diagrams, Data tables, Equations, Formulas, Calculations, Citations/references, Bibliography or Headers.
At the start of the report, you should include
Title, IB candidate code and number of words. No requirement for a cover or contents page.
The following formatting is recommended for eCoursework:
• Arial font size 12 (where the language / script supports it)
• Double-line spacing
• Numbered pages
• Portrait orientation (rather than landscape) – except where it is necessary to accommodate a specific item such as a graph or illustration - reference images and equations
AIP is the referencing format commonly used in the field of physics. AIP is a numbered style with references numbered in the order of appearance in the article and listed in that order at the end of the article.
The purpose of this guidance is to make the script as easy as possible to read and mark for the examiner. A candidate will not be penalized for failing to comply with above formatting.
