The Cash-for-work program is a government initiative to empower communities affected by the draught through finances in exchange for community work.
Beneficiaries are selected by sub-district structures, the ward development committees under the guidance of the District Disaster Management Committee. Projects are selected by communities and supervised by the local authority. Each work cycle is 10 days and beneficiaries are paid through the back.
Community work includes drainage clearing, vegetation control, garbage collection, all related to cleanliness and disaster mitigation.
During the period under review, November and December 2024 shows the highest amount of waste collected from the Cash-for-Work program in Kitwe district.
The Youth Climate Action Fund (YCAF) in Kitwe is supporting youth-led initiatives, including waste management projects, with grants from Bloomberg Philanthropies.

On 15th July 2025, Kitwe City Council held an indaba on solid waste management to discuss constructive dialogue, identify challenges and develop practical solutions concerning waste management in the district.
The indaba brought together Civic leaders, ward development Committees, (WDC's), Small and Medium Enterprises (SME's), Health personnels, Waste collection companies and community members.
Speaking during the indaba which was held at Buchi Hall, Her Worship the Mayor Ms. Mwaya Mpasa identified households not subscribing to waste collection services, use of unapproved disposal methods and limited community involvement as the major cause of the rising illegal dumping sites.
The Mayor proposed strengthening of collaboration through stakeholder engagement, identifying challenges, develop community based solutions and a changed mindset of community members for sustainable waste management habits.
