Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a college and career readiness program at Kailua Intermediate School (KIS) designed to help students build the skills needed to be successful in a global society. The program places special emphasis on developing writing, critical thinking, teamwork, organization and reading skills. In addition to taking the AVID elective course, students when eligible may enroll in Honors courses at KIS.
GRADE 7 AVID ELECTIVE: COLLEGE PREP SKILLS (TMG1011)
The 7th grade AVID Elective course will give students the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with their classmates while building foundational skills. Students will work toward achieving short and long-term goals, improving skills in writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading as well as speech and presentation skills.They will also practice note-taking in relation to studying and test preparation. Students will be exposed to college and career related field trips, guest speakers, activities, and projects.
GRADE 8 AVID ELECTIVE: COLLEGE PREP SKILLS (TMG1011)
The 8th grade AVID Elective course is the year of preparation for high school. Students will continue to build on the relationships they made the previous year and will regularly exhibit, utilize and improve the foundational skills they learned in 7th grade.They will refine previous goals and create new ones. Students will continue to explore college and careers through field trips, guest speakers, etc but will dive deeper into college and career topics through research projects and activities.
