KIS Library Weeding-out Policy of Unwanted Materials

Weeding out policy is implemented by KIS library to weeding out unwanted stock and to retain the stock quality. The weeding policy is required because of: ageing of stock, tear-and-wear of the physical media, fluctuation in demand of users, curricular changes, and unwanted gifts.

Reasons for weeding

  • Obsolete (Changes in curriculum, changes in the discipline such as IT, politics, science and technology, and other)

  • Damaged (Item is damaged beyond repair. Item is a health hazard – e.g. mold. Item has aged beyond its ability to attract borrowers)

  • Sensitive (Age appropriateness and other criteria such as racial or gender equality)

  • Lost

Revision of the library collection is executed routinely (e.g. within the inventory process) as well as individually (e.g. suitable items coming up during the circulation process, teachers’ demands, or curricular changes).

The weeded-out items will be offered to the school community first than to partnered institutions if there are any. Then to the public and charity and the remaining items will be recycled.
