Education

Education is for Everyone

The Reverend Samuel Tusuubira and his wife Mary have worked in the schools for many years helping children at risk. They have focused on education about AIDS and other transmittable diseases, good nutrition, self-image issues and other childhood problems. In years past they have participated in creating radio broadcasts regarding the topic of AIDS.

The Kironde Education and Health Fund has given children of Kigalama greater access to education by removing the drudgery of fetching water and other barriers such as ingesting contaminated well water, that inhibited them from attending school. Rather than spending an upwards of five hours a day on traveling to the wells and back, children can attend a full day of school and have time to complete homework because rainwater tanks are now supplying water directly to households.

The energy that parents and families spent on collecting water has been reallocated to more productive use. They now spend greater resources and energy on farming and various other pursuits. This in turn results in a more stable income, thus a healthier, more nurturing family environment that is necessary for children to grow up and reach their full potential. It also provides the school fees for the children to receive valuable educations at various existing local schools. It is this holistic approach that separates KEHF from the traditional NGO (non-governmental organization) model.
