Spofford

In 1877 the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio railroad arrived in San Antonio and began to expand westward from there. The route selected by the railroad followed the old San Antonio to San Diego stage line. However, whenever possible, it was built close to the Mexican border. In the original plans the railroad was to pass through Brackettville which would have been a straight line from Uvalde to Del Rio. The right-of-way and track mound were completed almost to the present school campus in Brackettville but the plans were changed. In 1881 the railroad was built south of Brackettville. A water tower, depot, housing for workers, hotel for travelers and a mercantile store were built at this train stop. So began the settlement of Spofford.
