Brackettville

In 1852 soon after the fort began to take shape, Oscar Brackett came to Las Moras Creek and claimed land on the north side of the creek.  He established a stage stop, freight office and a dry goods store to service the new fort and the stage line on the lower road from San Antonio to El Paso.

August Mendeke came with O.B. Brackett to also file a claim for property in the townsite.   As they were entering the area a wheel fell off the coach.  The coach collapsed and August Mendeke’s leg was broken.  He told O.B. Brackett to leave him and run on to the land office to file their claims as the deadline was near.  Mr. Brackett made it in time and the deeds were issued.

And so began the settlement of Las Moras which was later named Brackett and then Brackettville.
