Guzhend workshop Oct 2024

Our long standing member, Sarah, persuaded her music teacher and friend Julie Zhu Xiao Meng to bring her  Guzhend along to talk about the instrument and to play for us. We heard about the history of this beautiful instrument and Julie played traditional songs and told us what they mean in Chinese culture.

The Guzhend is a Chinese string instrument similar to a Zither. It is sometimes referred to as the Chinese Harp.

Julie gives charity performances with her students at Chinese festivals and has run many events like this across the country. She wants to promote  this instrument which is not very well known in the West.

It was a very informal and relaxing afternoon, and Julie's enchanting rendition of the music was enhanced by her talented and graceful playing.
