The Kings Pond Preservation Society opposes the councils offline plans for Kings Pond. We are therefore campaigning for and championing an approach which retains the pond as a large body of water on the River Wey with additional enhancements which make the space better for wildlife and visitors alike. We are engaging with industry experts and advisors to create an evidence led alternative to the offline option.
Our plan include:
Dredging to restore water depth and removing the silt build up in the pond.
Installation of upstream silt traps which, according to South East Water, have the potential to reduce silt ingress into the pond by up to 80% and thus reduce dredging operations from once every thirty years to potentially every 100-150 years!
Installation of revetments and repairs where erosion has undermined the integrity of the bank.
Enhancements to introduce new nesting grounds and improve the environs for the existing waterfowl at Kings Pond.
Improving biodiversity by introducing flora to the site including marginal vegetation and aquatic plants aimed at improving both water quality and habitat for wildlife.
Installation of a small butterfly meadow to improve biodiversity.
Installation of a bog garden to improve the overall aesthetics of an unloved area of the pond which aims to increase dragonfly numbers and support a wider increase in biodiversity.
Installation of a pollinators garden to benefit bees and butterflies which will double as a sensory garden for visitors with special educational needs and disabilities in addition to enhancing biodiversity.
Installation of a wildlife garden aimed at improving biodiversity and providing educational enrichment to visitors.
Improvements to access and walkways to make them more accessible, especially for the disabled.
Installation of a wheelchair accessible platform to make Kings Pond more accessible and inviting to disabled visitors.
More benches to cater for those with limited mobility.
Enhancements to make Kings Pond a better place for visitors along with improved signage to provide educational enrichment.
