 THE STORY

A JOURNEY THROUGH THE HISTORY OF THE BASOTHO NATION

The core of the story begins on top of Thaba Bosiu Mountain, where an ancient Basotho village comes to life.

The village is presented through everyday activities, oral storytelling, music and historical narration.

Audiences are taken into an environment where they can experience the atmosphere of the ancient Basotho community while being guided through the historical story.

From Thaba Bosiu, the journey expands across Lesotho.

The experience takes audiences through other significant royal sites and beautiful landscapes, including: Matsieng, Likhoele, Mokhotlong, Kome Caves, Katse Dam, Maletsunyane Falls, Makeneng, Phamong, and Makoanyane Square in Maseru

Through this journey, audiences are introduced to the life and contribution of each monarch in the royal succession.

At the same time, the experience showcases the natural beauty, cultural identity and heritage of Lesotho.

THABA BOSIU

WHERE THE JOURNEY BEGINS

Thaba Bosiu forms the core starting point of the KINGS OF LESOTHO story. At the top of the mountain, an ancient Basotho village comes to life. The village reflects everyday life through activities, oral storytelling, music and historical narration. The experience allows visitors to enter this historical environment and encounter the story of the Basotho nation in an immersive way. Thaba Bosiu provides the starting point for understanding the history of King Moshoeshoe I and the formation of the Kingdom.

THE ROYAL SUCCESSION

FROM KING MOSHOESHOE I TO KING LETSIE III

The central focus of KINGS OF LESOTHO is the royal succession of the Kingdom of Lesotho. The journey introduces audiences to the lives and contributions of the monarchs, beginning with the founder of the Kingdom, King Moshoeshoe I, and continuing through the royal succession to His Majesty King Letsie III, the 9th monarch. The story places the royal succession within the wider historical and geographical landscape of Lesotho. Through the experience, audiences encounter royal history alongside the places, landscapes and cultural heritage associated with the Kingdom. The project provides a contemporary way of preserving and presenting this history for future generations.

LESOTHO'S LANDSCAPES

THE KINGDOM IN THE SKY

The production journey took the creative team across Lesotho's beautiful landscapes and heritage sites. The experience showcases the country's mountains, valleys, rivers and other natural environments alongside its historical and cultural locations. The production included flying drones high over Lesotho's landscapes and visiting heritage sites throughout the country. The journey became more than simply a film production. It became a tour through the beautiful Kingdom of Lesotho — the Mountain Kingdom, also described as the Kingdom in the Sky. The landscapes form an important part of the immersive experience and help audiences understand the relationship between the history of the Basotho nation and the land in which that history unfolded.

HERITAGE & CULTURAL IDENTITY, HISTORY, CULTURE AND TECHNOLOGY

KINGS OF LESOTHO combines heritage preservation with immersive technology. The project brings together historical research, cultural heritage, visual storytelling and virtual reality to create a contemporary experience of Lesotho's history. The experience incorporates: Royal history, Cultural heritage, Historical research, Archival references, Traditional music, Oral storytelling, Natural landscapes, Historically inspired environments, Immersive virtual reality, and Spatial sound. Through this combination, the project seeks to preserve Basotho history for future generations while making it accessible in an emotionally engaging and contemporary format.

THE PRODUCTION JOURNEY

A JOURNEY THROUGH THE KINGDOM

The production of KINGS OF LESOTHO was an extraordinary journey through Lesotho. The creative team travelled across the country to visit heritage sites and capture the landscapes that form part of the experience. The team flew drones high over Lesotho's beautiful landscapes while visiting heritage locations and capturing material for the immersive experience. The production journey provided an opportunity to experience the country from different perspectives and to bring its natural beauty into the story of the royal succession. The journey across the country became an important part of the creative process. From heritage sites to landscapes, the production connected the history of the Basotho nation with the physical environment of the Kingdom. It was, in many ways, a tour around this beautiful country — the Mountain Kingdom and the Kingdom in the Sky.

ROYAL ARCHIVES, MUSEUM AND INFORMATION CENTRE

THE HERITAGE & RESEARCH PARTNER

The Royal Archives, Museum and Information Centre (RAM) is the custodian of the Archives of the Royal Family.

In the KINGS OF LESOTHO project, the primary role of the Royal Archives and Museum was to provide the research needed to produce this historic immersive experience.

The Royal Archives and Museum worked in collaboration with MP Multimedia Pty Ltd, the Lesotho-based creative company responsible for creating and producing the immersive KINGS OF LESOTHO experience.

 ABOUT THE ROYAL ARCHIVES, MUSEUM AND INFORMATION CENTRE
Royal Archives, Museum and Information Centre, in short Royal Archives and Museum (RAM), is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) that was established and legally registered in 2008. The organisation is administered on behalf of the Royal Family by a ten-member Board of Trustees. The Board of Trustees consists of experts in the fields of: Archives, Anthropology, Archaeology, Architecture, Cultural Heritage, History The centre was opened to the public in November 2012. It preserves the heritage relating to Royalty and Chieftainship in Lesotho. The Royal Archives and Museum is located in Matsieng, approximately 45 kilometres south of Maseru, and is adjacent to the Royal residence. The centre is situated in a restored historic building that was previously used as the offices of Queen Regent Mants'ebo Seeiso from the late 1940s to 1960, and later by King Moshoeshoe II between 1960 and 1965. Matsieng, as a royal heritage site, is recognised as the second home of the Basotho nation after Thaba Bosiu.
