A royal ant is born under unusual circumstances. Deemed unfit to start a queendom, the newborn is sent to work among the drifters—ants who complete odd jobs for the colony. Her name is Fern.

Soon after she joins the ranks of the common ant, Fern realizes there's something suspicious about her work, almost as if someone is trying to keep her trapped underground.

Her quest for answers leads her to unexpected places, first to the butchering rooms, then the graveyards, then to the eastern forest where a terrifying deathroot plague threatens the neighboring queendom. Within this land lies a threat only she can hear, leaving her as the forest's only savior... Or its ultimate killer.
