Arthur wandered through the woods and came across a young maiden gathering fruits and berries.
" Hello there," Arthur said to her in his native language.
The woman was frightened by the strange man in her forest who seemed to speak in a strange language. "Who...Who are you?" She said to him.
Hearing her speak in her own language, Arthur was able to use his magic to establish a way for him to communicate with the people here. He would hear them speak his language, yet they would hear him speak theirs. It was a useful trick that Merlin had taught him over the years.
"I am sorry if I frightened you. My name is Arthur. I am new to this land and I am searching for someone named Rama. I am told that he lives out in these woods...?" Arthur hoped this woman knew Rama and could help him on his search.
Still wary of the man dressed in strange robes and carrying a strange sword she told him, "My name is Sita. Rama is my husband. What is it you search him out for?" She replied.
"I have been brought to this land by your Lord Shiva, in order to train Rama and help him defeat the Demon King Ravana!" Arthur proclaimed.
Amazed by his declaration, Sita took Arthur to where Rama did his daily meditations. Once they met, Arthur readily told Rama why he was there and that it was Shiva who brought him, although he did not speak of the time traveling aspect of his journey.
Rama responded "If Shiva wishes for you to train me and journey with me, then I must go along with his wishes."
"What sort of weapon do you wish to train with my young friend?" Arthur asked Rama.
"This bow, the Sharanga. It is the bow that belonged to the God Vishnu. I am told that because I am able to string and use it, his spirit lives in me. But I don't know how to use this heavenly power inside me" Rama responded. "I almost burned down the forest once because I accidentally set fire to the arrow's tip with my power" Rama said in a worried voice.
"I see. Well I think I know why I was brought here to be your mentor," Arthur said as he drew his blade from its sheath. "You have a bow belonging to a god, you may even have godly power inside you. I myself possess a sword made by the gods in heaven as well. This is Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi. I also have the blood of a nine-tailed fox inside of me. Nine-tailed foxes have magical powers that can rival that of gods. I believe that Shiva has brought me here to teach you not only how to use your bow, but also teach you how to control your power." Arthur explained to Rama.
After Rama agreed to the training that Arthur proposed, they spent the next four years training in archery and magic. It was difficult at first for them both, as Arthur's fox magic was quite different from Rama's abilities. But once Arthur got a feel for what Rama could do, teaching him how to control it became a simple task. At the end of the four years, Rama could split arrows by firing them on top of each other. He could leap to the height of the trees and stay long enough to fire off three burning arrows before descending to the ground. And Rama could fire a burning arrow that could pierce through a mountain without fear of burning anything but the target. They were ready to begin their journey together. One with a heavenly sword, and the other a divine bow.
Author's Note: So welcome to the first actual story. For this story I wanted to tell everyone in a bit more detail the relationship between Arthur and Rama, as mentor and student. Eventually becoming friends, but more on that later. In this story Rama and Arthur are the main two heroes so other than Sita I decided not to talk about anyone else in the woods with them. With battles between gods and demons in the wake, I do not feel the need to bring anyone else along with them. Sita is only playing a minor role as the one who first discovered Arthur in the woods. For obvious reasons, I wanted Arthur and Sita to have trouble communicating since they would not be speaking the same language at this point in time, but I also wanted to show that Arthur's magic extended beyond magic that had combat abilities so I had him develop the way to speak to others as mentioned. Rama was described in the stories as being the most skilled of his brothers, so I wanted the mentoring that Arthur provided to be beyond archery, but actually be about controlling a magical power that Rama would have as the avatar of Vishnu. The abilities I chose to give him have a lot to do from the inspiration I got from the MOBA game Smite. Hope you all enjoyed this first story and I look forward to showing more of my ideas with you guys.
