8th Grade Course Description

This course is a continuation of Lucy Calkin’s Reader’s and Writer’s workshop framework in which students will build on and expand their existing knowledge of reading and writing skills. Students will continue to learn about writing techniques while studying three types of writing- narrative, informative/expository, and argumentative. Students will learn about different literary devices and strategies and apply them to material read in class as well as materials of their own choosing based on interest and reading ability. They will demonstrate comprehension of texts, and reading/writing strategies through small and large group discussions, teacher conferencing, and journaling. Students will continue to practice communicating their analyses of texts and research through oral presentations and technology-based projects.
