A few years back, everything I did related to my home interiors was the result of my own inspirations, planning and strategies. I did not seek outside consultation. I relied on quick inspiration posts from Pinterest and online images, assuming that it would be enough, but it did not take long for me to learn that designing the interior of your home is a very layered process. That’s when I felt that something shifted in me. I did not want to waste any more money on my own inspiration and designs by drawing ideas from online pictures. I needed an inspiration figure, and that’s when I began browsing interior design magazines.
Instead of random Pinterest ideas, I found deep discussions about certain layouts, spaces and colours, and how they all come together to make the home feel more comfortable. These magazines help me understand by certain layouts work, and how different layers mixed well with each other. So designing a home is not about aesthetics. It’s about proportion, functionality and ensuring long-term comfort.
By exploring more content from Interior Magazine India, I focused on real homes and learnt how context matters in each one of them. In the magazines, I found that each home was different. There was some element on which everything was hanging. In some homes, it was light in some homes. It was about having greenery take the central stage. These were the homes that met family needs, lifestyle, climate conditions, and worked around the daily routines of people living inside. For instance, in the architecture design magazine, I found a couch-like shoe storage near the entrance gate, where kids could sit, tie their shoelaces and leave to catch their bus to school every day. It ensured that the kids are not bringing outside shoes inside the home, while also having a comfortable place to sit, just as they are about to step out.
So, suddenly, the natural light, windows, and walls became as important as rugs and sofas. I could connect the architecture and interiors in a way that helped me see design as more of an intentional thing rather than inspirational and decorative. So, thoughtful planning in interior designing goes a long way, and it shapes how a home feels throughout the year until you change it.
The interior design magazines have helped me steer clear of the common design mistakes. I stopped prioritising material, and instead chose comfort, and prioritised thoughtful choices that would suit my family and me. The current interior design choices are inspired by The Ideal Home and Garden, and they help my family function smoothly in our home in our day-to-day lives. So, if you’re looking for inspiration, ideas or new perspectives around interior design, go to The Ideal Home and Garden as it’s a good place to begin.
