ABC Radio senior producer Kimberly Howie tells how her personal experience motivated her to tell the stories of other children of war veterans. Her father was an Army officer and a Vietnam veteran.

Australian Diggers in Vietnam War – 1968, black and white, (28:43 mins)
A documentary made in 1968 for publicity purposes to give insight into the Australian soldiers' experience. The film follows a group of Australian soldiers transiting into Vietnam, onto helicopter and into a contact with the VC, involving gunfire and capture of a Viet Cong fighter. The narrator provides information about Australian and Viet Cong communications, tactics, supply lines, operational planning and other related matters. Other scenes include the gunners' command post, Army Air support, gun detachments firing, 20 pounder guns firing, river-borne operations, troops tracking VC and wading through mud, creeks and moving through similar obstacles, use of APC's on the beach, inspecting villages for VC, detaining suspects for questioning. Friendly interactions with locals and the work of army mobile clinics is also covered.

On Thursday the 18th of August 2016, Australia marked the 50th anniversary of the battle of Long Tan. It was the most costly battle for Australia during the Vietnam War with 18 killed and 24 wounded.

Here is the very moving story that 60 Minutes (Nine Network) Australia did on the Battle of Long Tan. It was broadcast on 13 August 2006 and includes some actual video and audio from the battle with some graphic, confronting scenes. Former Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Long Tan veterans were interviewed for the documentary.
For three and a half hours in the mud and shattered trees of a rubber plantation called Long Tan, 105 young Australians and 3 New Zealanders fought and defeated 2,500 Viet Cong and North Vietnamese soldiers in an epic battle. 18 Australians were killed and 21 wounded with more than 500 VC and NVA killed with more than 1,000 wounded.
