In sports there are tons of emotions, desires, feelings, and excitements. Each athlete has had a time when they could not know how they were doing the game but it either felt good or bad. In this writing I am going to be talking about the science of emotions in sports. Why it happens, when it happens, how does it happen. Everything you can think of about emotions will be here for answers to questions. I am going explain how emotions can affect you in your sports negatively and positively. Also, what emotions are associated with sports and the power of emotions while playing sports.
The authors of this article wrote this for people curious about the effects of emotions in the world of sports and the science behind it. It answers questions about conceptualizing emotions and affects, sociological perspectives in the study of emotions, what they know about the topic and etc. It also breaks down the science and facts of each topic and makes it easy for you to understand the information provided. One example of the topic is” Research into emotions, affect, and feelings can arguably be subsumed under the broader umbrella of ‘affective lines of inquiry’ (Ashkanasy et al. Citation2017; Knudsen and Stage Citation2015).”(page 3)
In this article the topic of emotion in sports is used the most in the article and with my topic. The writing goes deeper with science and technological studies and facts behind it. I feel like the author Zoe Avner did a wonderful job with getting her evidence and facts behind her point to support her statement. This article will be a major source for information and context if needed, giving a lot of good points and facts that will be needed in the future.
In the video it gives you a lot of basic facts and information about the emotions, psychology, and the anxiety behind sports and what athletes have to go through. This video really focuses on a unique perspective of the topic. It focuses on the athlete's side, what they go through daily or on a game day. I really enjoyed watching this video because it gives you good facts about the topic and being an athlete myself, I can relate to what they are saying about the topic.
In the video it says a lot of great points and interesting things. But the most valuable information I received from the video was, “When doubt and worry become too much the body reacts” (time 6:01). This quote from the video just explains that the body can only take so much at one time and that everyone has a limit. This video would be a reliable source if you just now starting your research and want the perspective of the athlete. If you want the basics and perspective of an athlete and what they must go through daily with sports and emotions this is the source for you.
This source of evidence is different from the other resources. It gives you a real feel for the game or of being an athlete, making you feel like you're in the gym watching or in the game with the writer. In this interview I asked my dad some questions about a time that I hit a game winner in a nail bitter of a game. He gave me everything I needed to hear, explained the atmosphere, who what, where of what was going on in the gym. Just a great overall piece of information.
This evidence can easily be counted as one of my favorite pieces of evidence. It gives me real world scenarios and makes me feel like I'm in the game. A quote straight from the reading says “The time had dialed down to 8 seconds left, I was guarding their point guard full court, and I stole the ball from him and laid the ball with time falling off the clock, and the buzzer sounded. Game over. I scored the game winning points and sealed the win for my team. This is one of my best memories of my basketball career”. The quote shows the emotions in the sport world, but in a positive way. The writer had won the game for his team and was extremely happy about what he had accomplished. This is why this source is one of the best in my opinion, it gives you a perspective of emotions in sports that no other article can do.
In this article it gives u a different aspect and a different view of the effects of emotions in sports and how it can help and hurt you in separate ways. This article uses different figures and tables to show data and facts about emotions and their different qualities. One of the figures explains positive emotions, negative emotions, satisfaction, future intentions, functional quality, and outcome quality. All these listings have some type of effect on an athlete in their sport.
In this reading I really enjoyed analyzing the figures and tables. The figures really give you a good visual to breakdown the aspects of the topic and really help you grasp the information. A quote straight from the article that I really thought was important was “The role of emotions in the behavior of consumers has been increasingly recognized in the work on marketing, as illustrated by the constant development of the theory that incorporates concepts related to emotion as a background of commercial behavior”. This line from the reading just shows a brief example of what the article explains and talks about and is a great resource.
For my last source I used a ted talk video by Martin Hagger to use as a resource for my topic. This video gives you a different point of view of the topic emotions in sports. Martin speaks heavily about the psychology of sports. The mindset of an athlete, what they think about, how they think. Pretty much the insides of the athlete intellectually. I also liked how Martin used real world athletes and facts to get his point across. That made the video way more intriguing and interesting when you realize he is using actual people you know and enjoy watching on television.
The most important quote I received from this video is ‘make sure your goals are measurable” (12:02). I like this quote because it does not just relate to sports, but anyone can use it any part of their life. Martin explains that setting reachable goals helps the mind think and know they can get something done or reach that goal. And that helps with athletes and their mind. If they have goals set, that sets a trigger in their mind that they can achieve it and most likely they will. This source of information would have to be my second favorite source. I love how Martin explains the psychology of sports and the mindset of athletes, it gives you great information. Overall, a great source for your research.
