While power generally assumes controlling others, empowerment emerges as a concept depicting control over self and your capacity to self-regulate. Empowerment involves an understanding of the extent of one’s own choices and their consequences while recognizing the centers of power at play. “I am not in control of your actions, but I control my own”. Despite other’s attempts to coerce and influence factors beyond their control, empowered individuals recognize an internal locus of power; while individuals who believe their actions are a result of others, (“they made me do it”), perceive an external locus of power. Empowered individuals recognize that interpreting a message is subjective.
