The authors brilliantly document the near-collapse of effective and authentic communication between individuals, families, associational groups, and the society at large. Following a persuasive dissection of the causes and effects of the current epidemic of “disinformation, deceptions, and public toleration of untruths, ” they offer both clear explanations as to why this has occurred and provide practical mechanisms for developing empathy and empowerment to bring about self and societal health.

If this book could become required reading for every high school student / for every single one of you who will be taking the baton from my generation (us longtime passengers of Spaceship Earth), to become our society's next shapers and deciders, our citizens of tomorrow, oh what a valuable, hopeful re-set there could be, for all of us ! Here is the only toolbox and roadmap you really need to navigate out of this ditch, to where you want to be.
Beth A. Berg (January 27, 2022 )
This is a good book. The authors proceed from the (not new at all) assumption that healthy
communication is learnable--like other skills, crafts, arts. Most of us are not born knowing know to bake bread, but we can learn. Most of us are not born knowing how to ski, but we can learn. And most of us are not born knowing how to talk. Or listen. But we can learn how to be better children, better lovers, better parents. We can learn to see different possibilities today than what we knew yesterday.
This would be a fine book for reading clubs. "Authenticity, Empathy, Empowerment", the subtitle, wants very much to be talked about among folk who gather to exchange real thoughts and feelings. Some folk will respond more readily to different chapters, of course, and they can take the lead there, whilst others, all learning, can lead in other chapters.
Perhaps we can think of this book as a tool box. Some days we need a small Phillips screwdriver, other days a rubber hammer. Yes, it really is a big tool box, and one that can be used to mend some big fences.

Timing is everything! This just published book on building effective individual and community relationships-based on healthy communication skills- comes as we continue to struggle with the crisis of leadership in responding to the Covid Pandemic. The reader is compelled to ask: "If the principles espoused in this book had been evident in how both citizens and public officials responded to the Pandemic, would there have been fewer lives lost, less time spent in quarantine and less disruption to our daily lives and relationships?"
The three authors address these important topics from their different perspectives: as a public administrator, a teacher and a medical professional. Yet they unite in their belief that healthy individuals and a healthy society can best be achieved through a commitment to authenticity, empathy, and empowerment in communications.
Unlike many a "how to do it" books, this one is uniquely based on the authors' academic research and professional experience. For individuals searching for new means of achieving personal growth and a healthier community environment, this book is a must read. I highly recommend it.
David Ambler (February 16, 2022)
In my former career as a marketing professional, this book would have been required reading for my staff and recommended reading for my colleagues. By becoming more self-aware and authentic in our communication with customers and each other, we could have had a better understanding of their needs and our capacity to help. By developing empathy with customers who are trying to solve frustrating business problems, we could have listened better and gained their trust. By practicing healthy communication in our business relationships, both marketer and customer would have become empowered to share in decision-making.
The foundations put forth in this book can also help develop healthy communication as we forge through the many relationships in our personal lives. Students in high school and college, young people beginning their careers, and those of all ages throughout their lives, will benefit. It will change their way of approaching relationships with a sense of interconnectivity and social responsibility by being more mindful of healthy communication.

Keys to Healthy Communication is a deep dive into basic concepts underlying conditions that are essential to effective, healthy communication. The discussion and examples span personal, interpersonal, political and business perspectives while emphasizing the interplay among all these arenas. The material is fresh, topical and easily applied to this wide range of situations where healthy communication is critical to success. The information presented is thoroughly researched and supported by studies and facts across the spectrum of experts in relevant social and medical sciences.
A distinguishing feature of this book is an emphasis on the interplay of physical, mental, emotional and relationship health to overall healthy communication at all levels of society. Readability and understanding are aided by a well-timed sprinkling of tips, cartoons, summary tables and anecdotal examples throughout. Following the extensive exploration of what have been identified as healthy communication basics, the authors then offer practical guidance and advice for personal, real-world application of their findings to improve the overall health of individuals, organizations and society.

To sustain a fulfilling life, one must make a lifetime commitment to a healthy life. But what is the general definition of a “healthy life?” After witnessing the COVID-19 pandemic, the Keys to Healthy Communication was written. Authors Dr. Bobby Patton, Dr. Rusalyn Andrews, and Dr. Jennifer Daily developed this self-help guide to educate readers on improving interpersonal communication.
The first section, ‘Overview,’ outlines the many types of health and the necessity of the complementary relationship between personal and social health in achieving total well-being.
The first essential key to effective communication is ‘Authenticity,’ covered in section two. People are inundated with numerous erroneous beliefs and “alleged” facts, prompting them to question their own beliefs or those of others until they have properly analyzed and compared them to proof. The degree of sincerity exchanged between partners is also advantageous to the health of intimate relationships. Being unreal causes a skewed conscience, which leads to manipulation, dishonesty, and even abuse. Conversely, mutual trust in one another boosts productivity and decides the failure or success of society.
The importance of the second key to effective communication, ‘Empathy,’ is highlighted in the third section. Given people’s natural propensity to develop sympathy, empathy is seen as a key that may be taught through mindfulness or “moment-to-moment, non-judgmental awareness.” In addition, empathy is essential for a dynamic society because it allows people to empathize with people and cultures they do not necessarily identify with or agree with.
Section four is on ‘Empowerment,’ which depicts self-control and the ability to self-regulate, as well as comprehending the extent of one’s own choices and the repercussions of those actions, as well as detecting the power centers at play. Social variables that induce ill health are caused by a lack of self-authority.
The fifth section explains the activities, skills, and attitudes that should be practiced and a strategy for promoting good communication throughout one’s life. Finally, it breaks down all of the measures to improve one’s physical, mental, and relationship health into categories based on age and environment.
Keys to Healthy Communication: Authenticity, Empathy and Empowerment is an extensive self-help book filled with practical and actionable guidance. This well-researched book explains how individuals may adopt and learn certain practices and skills in daily lives to help them develop as a person.

From professors Patton, Andrews, and Daily, a deep dive into the intricacies of communication.
The authors assert that physical, mental, spiritual, relational, and societal health is “directly linked to communication behaviors.” This dynamic vision of health operates on a continuum and is present throughout the life cycle, from a newborn’s cry to the last words of the dying. Patton, Andrews, and Daily break down and define the types of communication into intrapersonal (communication within oneself), impersonal (when communication occurs between people considered interchangeable), and interpersonal (communication within the context of a relationship) categories. Interpersonal communication, for example, has been shown to affect mortality, cardiovascular health, and more. A sign of healthy interpersonal communication is reciprocal self-disclosure, while playing games often signals a relationship’s downfall. On a societal level, frauds, scams, and disinformation campaigns are examples of poor communication run amok.
To help readers discern truth from fiction, the authors offer tips for reality testing (“Before believing or sharing information on social media, ask yourself such questions as the following: Do I have the hard evidence to know it’s true? Does it come from reliable sources? Is the information helpful or useful?”). Empathy is touted as instrumental in most emotional negotiations. The book is well researched and thorough, with helpful diagrams and tables. It’s also up to date, incorporating information on the Covid-19 pandemic, pop culture concepts like “fake news,” and the effects of social media into the conversation.
Kirkus Review (Jan 14, 2022)
Plot/Idea: A deep dive into the importance of communication particularly during the times of isolation in the pandemic of 2020, this book is well-researched. The author covers a lot of ground and topics in relation to the importance of communication and how it is related to health and well-being.
Prose: This book is easy to understand, despite the textbook-like feel to the book and the specificity of the information. Readers don’t necessarily need a medical degree to understand the science behind effective communication, but a strong interest would help.
Originality: The importance of communication and how it relates to health during a time when people were isolated from others is a refreshing topic. Personal reflection throughout the work asks worthwhile questions to consider. “Dr. Jen’s Rx” is a clever addition throughout.
Character Development/Execution: Including lots of information for the reader to consider, the reader can either read the book in its entirety or choose from the table of contents as it is divided into five sections of thoroughly researched information. The reflection questions are specific and thought-provoking.

5-star review! Reader's Favorite
Keys to Healthy Communication, by Bobby R. Patton, Ph.D., Rusalyn H. Andrews, Ph.D., and Jennifer Page Daily, MD, is a stellar guide to communication that you can benefit from today. Communication is more than simply talking to one another and listening. It's that, of course, but it also can strengthen one's physical and mental health, foster more meaningful relationships, and contribute to a better community and the wider world. COVID-19 is just one of the problems used to show how communication actions, whether good or bad, can have an impact. This book teaches us three buzzwords--Authenticity, Empathy, Empowerment--and how to use them when interacting with others, thus creating positive, healthier results. Responding negatively to a person or situation can affect our health, but if we try and are aware, we can actually prevent harmful communication and responses. This fascinating book is full of practical takeaways for younger and older audiences, and, if applied, can lead to better health in all areas.
Patton, Andrews, and Daily take us by the hand as we go deep diving into the health-related aspects of good communication. Living authentically is one of the major themes, but to be authentic means a stronger awareness of who you are, who others are, and what they and the world need from the communication. I like the point they stress that being authentic and being real can be daunting for some people, as most are reluctant to show vulnerability, but holding back, or this facade that people put forth, is responsible for health problems, toxic relationships, heartache, and abusive relationships. If we strive for honest communication, we come away with stronger minds, hearts, and relationships. Toxicity, abuse, and other negative effects can be turned into mutual trust, empathy, self-esteem, confidence, and so much more.
One of my favorite takeaways is that the authors' concepts can be applied in personal and professional ways, as well as families, groups, communities, and dealings with the world in general. Anecdotes, data, and exercises add energy and a personal feel. As a former social worker, I highly recommend this book. If you like lessons that show you how to be healthier and make a meaningful difference in life every day, Keys to Healthy Communication by Bobby R. Patton, Ph.D., Rusalyn H. Andrews, Ph.D., and Jennifer Page Daily, MD should not be missed.

Keys to Healthy Communication: Authenticity, Empathy, Empowerment by Bobby R. Patton, Ph.D., Rusalyn H. Andrews, Ph.D., and Jennifer Page Daily, MD provides an overview of health and wellness, the importance of communication in health, and the evolution of the human brain. The three medical experts describe authenticity in terms of determining right and wrong in relation to reality, the importance of reciprocal self-disclosure to maintaining a healthy relationship, and how critical trust, confidence, and societal health are central to maintaining a sound outlook on life, even in the middle of a pandemic. Empathy is shown to be a critical element both at home and abroad, in both personal and broader societal circles. The interplay between power and empowerment is discussed within the ambit of both healthy and unhealthy relationships. The work ends with exploring how to ensure holistic living through opening up relationships to a bright new future enhanced by greater cognitive control.
Bobby R. Patton, Rusalyn H. Andrews, and Jennifer Page Daily's book, Keys to Healthy Communication: Authenticity, Empathy, Empowerment, shows how, even when a work is grounded in intensive research, it can, nevertheless, be highly accessible to the average reader. The holistic nature of the authors’ work is so well-rounded that the insights they provide should prove to be extremely helpful to any reader who wishes to know more about how to maximize the benefits that can be obtained from healthy and open communication within any relationship, whether in the work environment or on the home front. The emphasis on the importance of open and honest communication for happy and healthful living is conveyed with such truth and sincerity that even the most jaded among us should be able to benefit on a multiplicity of levels from reading and reflecting on this work.

Keys to Healthy Communication: Authenticity Empathy Empowerment by Bobby R. Patton, Ph.D., Rusalyn H. Andrews, Ph.D., and Jennifer Page Daily, MD, reflects on social issues. One such example is the effect on physical and mental health through Covid 19. How has the pandemic impacted our society in both a negative and positive light and in turn, what does that do to our emotions, our empathy, and our thinking? The authors explain how all of these factors can alter or improve the manner we communicate with each other and teach us ways in which we can interact better.
I think through reading Keys to Healthy Communication by Bobby R. Patton, Ph.D., Rusalyn H. Andrews, Ph.D., and Jennifer Page Daily, MD, I have come to understand myself better. Though I may embody certain empathetic qualities to help me connect with people, I do have a difficult time opening up about my own concerns and stresses. The great thing is that we can practice healthy communication by meeting with friends and talking about future goals, mending fences with others, identifying habits we want to change, or learning how to interact in supportive ways. You can learn all about these by reading this book. It gives us a wealth of knowledge on how we can improve ourselves because, let’s face it, we all need it! One of Dr. Jen’s sayings is perfect for this: “The saddest fact in life is not that people have to suffer to grow, but that many people persist in suffering without growing.” How about we all try to persevere together?

Keys to Healthy Communication: Authenticity Empathy Empowerment by Bobby R. Patton, Ph.D., Rusalyn H. Andrews, Ph.D., and Jennifer Page Daily, MD centers on the different areas in which communication is used in our lives and how important it is to be able to communicate our thoughts and feelings effectively. Communication, although a part of our everyday life, is something that many struggle with. This book seeks to establish the importance of interpersonal communication through key concepts that allow a person to effectively and honestly communicate their feelings and thoughts.
Keys to Healthy Communication by Bobby R. Patton, Ph.D., Rusalyn H. Andrews, Ph.D., and Jennifer Page Daily, MD was a brilliant book with an insightful look into communication and how important it is in our everyday lives. Focusing on authenticity and honesty when communicating, you are taught to recognize your own feelings and communicate them in a way that can be readily received by those around you without any misconceptions or conflict. I enjoyed reading through each chapter, which takes you on a journey of learning and ends with the reader having the necessary tools to go out and practice better communication skills. As someone who has a hard time expressing themselves, I found this book to be truly inspiring and helpful in many ways. I think emphasizing the need for honesty and authenticity in communication is a brilliant concept. Even though it may seem simple, it is not something that is often achieved. I think this book would be a great help to many people and I highly recommend giving it a read.

Keys to Healthy Communication: Authenticity, Empathy, Empowerment is a powerful collaborative work by authors Bobby R. Patton, Rusalyn H. Andrews, and Jennifer Page Daily. This work puts emphasis on the importance of interpersonal communication to individual health. The book is divided into five sections. The first section provides an overview of the role of communication in health and wellness. The second discusses authenticity or the attribution of reality to our experiences and of our perception of the world. The third deals with the importance of empathy. The fourth is about personal empowerment. Finally, the fifth section is about unlocking your doors to welcome healthy communication. It is a work that attests to the power of healthy communication and how it creates a ripple effect when you are open, empathetic, and actively listening.
Keys to Healthy Communication deserves an audience. Built on the foundations of identifying detrimental communication practices in a time when the world is facing a global health crisis, this book will truly help you to adjust and navigate your way in the ever-growing demands of contemporary communication. Bobby R. Patton, Rusalyn H. Andrews, and Jennifer Page Daily highlight authenticity, empathy, and empowerment as keys to healthy communication--factors that, when overlooked, cause a breakdown in human interaction. With that in mind, the authors go the extra mile by providing reflections and activities that you can go back over to ensure that you receive the optimum learning and reading experience. This is not a magic pill that will change you overnight. Everything lies in practice and not just theories. I strongly recommend this book to everyone for its dedication to creating a healthy society through peaceful and well-delivered interactions.

Emphasis is placed on the role our personal, social, and emotional health plays in the well-being of our society generally. Each part of the book has valuable lessons and examples that, if applied, can help the reader foster healthier relationships and enjoy good health. I found the book helpful, the examples relatable, and the descriptions easy to understand. I highly recommend it to all readers.

Everyone in America should read this book. The authors’ central point is to demonstrate the link between effective communication and health. As the quality of communication improves, relationships improve. Then, as relationships become more meaningful, demonstrable benefits come to the immune system, including improved ability to ward off disease. But there’s more.
“Keys to Healthy Communication” is breath-taking in its scope. It clarifies essential aspects of human interaction, then shows wide-reaching benefits that follow from those lessons. Those benefits apply to individuals, but they also provide a bedrock that supports the health of a diverse society. The book defines and discusses empowerment in relationships. It deals with interpersonal conflicts, with questions of reality, with right vs wrong. At its core, the book takes up empathy, a learnable tool that could serve to improve communication and relationships in any setting. This book has potential to improve lives in every quarter of the nation. It has potential to improve the nation itself.
The authors’ final unit offers a lifelong plan for healthy communication, including strategies to balance the deep divisions in our culture. The desired outcome goes beyond medical health, touching on the broad societal health of America.
This book belongs in private reading, in book clubs and classrooms. It deserves to be discussed in HR offices and boardrooms, in doctor’s offices, from the pulpit, and any setting where people gather to discuss our national challenges. It touches on every age group. It’s relevant to families, with suggestions for developing young children and teens. “Keys to Healthy Communication: Authenticity, Empathy, Empowerment” could be a powerful antidote to multiple illnesses in our lives and our culture.

•Hubre De Klerk
How to correctly communicate is immensely important and these 3 topics: Authenticity, Empathy, and Empowerment, using them correctly makes communication correct and successful. I can honestly say that the pandemic and untrustworthy people have made especially online business and communication very hard. It is also difficult to get to know people, as they only show their sides that they believe others want to see to accept them. It is a continuous cycle, and this book sounds like the perfect thing to break and repair that cycle!
•Lindiwe Chakhala

Communication in any relationship, whether person to person, group to group, or nation to nation, is essential to a relationship working and thriving! The lack of communication in every aspect of our lives is apparent today. Something as simple as that could bring our country back together like it used to be! Effective communication could lower the divorce rate and allow our children to grow and thrive and have a better future. Congratulations on BOTD!
Heidi M Simone
Brenda Creech I agree! I constantly think of what we're modeling to our children and how can we show them to be better at communicating with others. How many times do I say, "Use your words."? Quite often! Sometimes, I need a reminder to use my words, too!

•Victoria Ebubechi
From this review, I can sense the impactful write-up these authors compiled on keys to healthy comunication. Infact, it is because of an ineffective communication that most people do not understand people they relate with. Some do not ask questions, rather they stay in their corner and assume which usually results to conflict.
Heidi M Simone
Victoria Ebubechi What a wonderful way to put it! I agree! What a better place this would be if we can find the words to communicate our thoughts and feelings.
•Astral Magi
Communication skills will definitely be something everybody should improve. I would love to get myself a copy of this book. Congrats on Botd.

A topic couldn’t be more timely and relevant than this book has. Because of social media where people are so immersed in their own world that true essence of communication is compromised, we need to be reminded now. I commend the author for coming up with this gem of a book.
•Mercy Sos Christopher
Whatever kind of relationship it is, a healthy communication is needed and very essential. Today, it is obvious that there is a lack of communication in every aspect of our life. A healthy communication could eradicate poverty and so many hazards altogether. When we communicate with one another we share our problems and success. Congrats to the author on BOTD
•Laura Ungureanu

•John Arun Kumar
This is a non-fiction. Bobby R. Palton., Rusalyn H. Andrews, and Jennifer Page Daily seem to have done their research well using real life experiences to discuss the importance of communication. Your review is well written. Congratulations on the BOTD!
•Boyko Ovcharov
Communication is the key indeed, esp. in human society worldwide. The book touches on this extremely important topic, while describing & analyzing the effects of bad (or lack of proper) communication. It also suggests some ways to balance the latter. Good review.
•Reva Parker
Congratulations on being the BOTD. Thank you for the free book. Communication is so important in everything. I've known people who like to use "big" words to supposedly show off their intelligence while creating it so those that they are writing for have no idea what they said. Also, sometimes both parties are thinking the other person gets their way all of the time and they don't. Clear communication would have helped tremendously in each of these cases. I believe this would be a great book for everyone.
•Chinasa Deborah
The authors, who have a wealth of knowledge, use it to inform the reader about the value of good communication and why we should make an effort to achieve it. They list various issues that can result from poor communication, such as conflict, depression, loneliness, etc., and how to solve them. The divorce rate might be lowered by improving communication, which would also benefit our children's development and future prospects. Congratulations on BOTD!
•Margo Burskaja
Have you ever heard the expression: "practice makes perfect"? Well, in my opinion, it is impossible to gain communication skills from the book of advice. It can't be achieved easily, only by work through trial and error. Then again, like always, just hard earned is something truly valued and worth having.
•Markova Olga
A very useful book, thank you, OnlineBookClub! For me as a lawyer, communication skills are a tool of vital importance to be successful professionally, and I look forward to reading this book. All the more so given the learned renome of the authors.
•Kayla Archer
This seems like a no-brainer, but I think this is a book everyone needs to read to get back on track. Social media, texting, and Covid have really effected our communication in a negative way.
Heidi M Simone
Kayla Archer This is very true! I'm sure most, if not all, people need help with learning how to better communicate with others. I'm glad that are resources, like this book, to help us!
•Ca Ar
With communication being so important in not only our everyday lives, but also in industries from business to government, it is no wonder that a book like this is required. In the digital age, communication has suffered greatly and I really hope this book will be able to bring tools to the reader to help improve their communication capabilities.

Bertha Jackson I agree! I find in order to teach my little ones to communicate, in the way they are able to, I need to be better at communicating, too.

This book seems very educational. A lot of people are not good at communication and this book would help out in that area

The world could use better communication skills (and the willingness to admit that those skills need to be improved). The fact that this book is written by such highly qualified individuals really attracts me to it, as does the fact that it’s still easy to read. I’ll have to give it a look when I get some free time. Congrats on the #BOTD!
